Reze
From Chainsaw Man
Reze is a main character in Chainsaw Man, a cheerful café worker who keeps crossing Denji's path and offers him his first real taste of romance, kindness and an ordinary life. But Reze is hiding an explosive secret, and everyone in her world wants the heart inside Denji's chest. She is voiced by Reina Ueda in Japanese and Alexis Tipton in English.
About Reze
Reze is a cheerful young woman who works at a small café and keeps crossing Denji's path after a chance meeting in a phone booth. Kind, teasing and strangely understanding of his rough life, she offers Denji his first real taste of romance. But Reze is hiding an explosive secret, and everyone wants the heart inside Denji's chest.
Appearance
Reze is a young woman with shoulder-length dark purple hair, bright green eyes and a gentle, teasing smile, usually seen in a loose white shirt and skirt from her café job, with a black choker at her throat. The choker is the detail that matters: hidden in it is a pin, like a grenade's. Reze's whole design is softness with a fuse, she looks like the answer to every dream Denji has ever had, which in Chainsaw Man should always be read as a warning. When her secret comes out, her transformed form keeps the same face, and adds the sleek, torpedo-shaped head and explosive body of the Bomb Devil.
Personality
Reze is kind, funny and perceptive, she laughs at Denji's rough edges without mocking him, teaches him things he never learned, and seems to see the lonely boy under the chainsaws more clearly than anyone. She is also a professional: an agent raised and trained from childhood, for whom affection is a tool of the job. The tragedy the story builds is that both are true at once, and Reze herself may no longer know where the performance ends. With Denji she glimpses the same thing he does, an ordinary life, school, small happiness, from the other side of an even crueller childhood. What she does with that glimpse is her story.
Background & Story
Reze appeared in Denji's life by apparent chance: a girl in a phone booth in the rain, then the new worker at a quiet café he began visiting daily. She taught the uneducated hunter to read a little, to swim, to imagine school, a gentle summer idyll for a boy who had never had one. Behind it: Reze is the Bomb Devil hybrid, a weapon raised in the Soviet Union's brutal hybrid programme, sent to Japan to steal the Chainsaw Devil's heart from Denji's chest. She is not the only hunter on that trail, and her mission collides with assassins from every nation. The Reze arc, the Chainsaw Man film's story, is the series' bittersweet heart: first love as both a rescue and a trap.
Powers & Abilities
- Bomb Devil hybrid: By pulling the pin at her throat, Reze transforms into the Bomb Devil hybrid, her head becomes a sleek torpedo and her body a living explosive.
- Explosions: Reze generates blasts from her own body, snapping sparks into explosions, launching herself with detonations and turning even her severed limbs into bombs.
- Hybrid regeneration: Like Denji, Reze revives and heals by consuming blood and triggering her transformation.
- Trained assassin: Raised as a weapon from childhood, Reze is an expert hand-to-hand fighter even without her devil form.
Key Relationships
- Denji: Her target and her first love, the boy she was sent to betray, whose dreams of an ordinary life mirror everything she was denied.
- Makima: The Public Safety commander standing between Reze and her mission, a presence Reze's handlers fear above all.
- Aki Hayakawa: One of the Public Safety hunters who fought Reze when her cover story fell apart and the Bomb Devil attacked.
