Kishibe

About Kishibe

Kishibe is the captain of Special Division 4 and the strongest devil hunter in Public Safety, a scarred veteran held together by contracts and alcohol. He believes the best hunters are the ones who are a little crazy, and he trains Denji and Power by beating them senseless day after day. His lessons are brutal, and they work.

Appearance

Kishibe is a tall, weathered man in his fifties with short dark hair going grey, stubble, and a long stitched scar running down the left side of his face and through his mouth, damage from a life spent being hit by devils. He wears the Public Safety suit like a uniform he has slept in, usually with a flask in reach. His build and bearing are pure veteran: nothing wasted, nothing hurried, eyes that have already priced every person in the room. In a series of flamboyant fighters, Kishibe's plainness is its own statement, this is what surviving fifty years of devil hunting actually looks like.

Personality

Kishibe is blunt, alcoholic, unsentimental and completely honest, the only man in Public Safety who says exactly what he thinks of Makima, his superiors and his chances. His philosophy is famous: devils fear hunters who are crazy, because crazy cannot be predicted or bargained with, so he cultivates his recruits' madness like a crop. Under the brutality is a professional's care, his training is cruel because the alternative is watching more young hunters die, as he has watched dozens. Kishibe has outlived his partners, his era and his illusions, and what remains is competence and a stubborn refusal to lie to himself. In a world of monsters and manipulators, that makes him almost unique.

Background & Story

Kishibe has hunted devils for decades, surviving long enough to become Public Safety's strongest hunter and the captain Makima trusts with her experimental division. He has contracts with multiple devils, including the Claw, Knife and Needle Devils, whose prices are written in the scars across his body. In his youth he partnered with the Chainsaw-obsessed Quanxi, the legendary hunter he still calls the strongest person he knows, and asked her out (and was rejected) more times than he can count. Now he spends his authority on two projects: keeping Division 4's monsters pointed at the right targets, and training Denji and Power in daily sessions of cheerful violence, because he has decided these two idiots might actually survive, and he intends to make sure of it.

Powers & Abilities

• Multiple devil contracts: Kishibe holds contracts with the Claw Devil, Knife Devil and Needle Devil, among others, the prices written in scars across his body.
• Master combatant: Decades of hunting have made Kishibe the strongest human devil hunter in Public Safety, able to overwhelm hybrids like Denji in training with ease.

Key Relationships

• Denji: His trainee, Kishibe's daily beatings are building Denji into a hunter who might survive what is coming.
• Power: His other trainee, whose wildness he channels with the same brutal, oddly fond training regime.
• Makima: His superior, whom Kishibe serves while trusting her least, he asks the questions about Makima that nobody else dares.
