Pochita

About Pochita

Pochita is the Chainsaw Devil, feared by devils everywhere, but to Denji he is a small, dog-like companion with a chainsaw nose and a loyal heart. The two survived poverty together, hunting devils for scraps. When Denji is killed, Pochita gives up his own heart to save him, becoming the engine inside Chainsaw Man's chest.

Appearance

Pochita looks like a round little orange dog with a chainsaw blade sticking out of his forehead, a pull-cord tail, handles on his back for carrying, big dark eyes and a perpetual expression of cheerful loyalty. He is small enough for a child to carry and sleeps curled against Denji like any pet. The contrast is the point: this adorable creature is the Chainsaw Devil, a being whose true form, a towering, four-armed chainsaw titan, is the most feared sight in Hell. Most of the time, though, Pochita simply barks, wags and asks, in the only ways he can, to be hugged.

Personality

As a pet, Pochita is simple and perfect: loyal, affectionate and happy with scraps of bread and a warm place beside Denji. He cannot speak in his small form, yet his feelings never need translation. The mystery is that this creature chose that life. The Chainsaw Devil was the devil other devils feared, the hero of Hell who answered devils' cries for help and fought armies of them, and what he wanted, after all of it, was the ordinary affection of a poor boy who treated him as family instead of a weapon. Pochita's love is the engine of the whole series, literally: his heart beats in Denji's chest, and his only request was to watch Denji live his dreams.

Background & Story

Long before Denji, the Chainsaw Devil was Hell's most terrifying figure, the devil who could erase other devils from existence, hunted by the Four Horsemen and the Weapon Devils in a battle that left him near death and shrunk into his small dog-like form. Escaping to Earth, wounded, he was found by a starving boy named Denji, who offered his own blood to save him in exchange for help surviving. The two became partners and family, hunting devils for the yakuza for scraps. When Denji was murdered, Pochita made the trade permanent: his heart for Denji's life, asking only that Denji show him his dreams. Every roar of Chainsaw Man since is Pochita keeping that promise.

Powers & Abilities

• The Chainsaw Devil: Pochita is the Chainsaw Devil itself, the devil who embodies humanity's fear of chainsaws, and the most feared devil among devils.
• Devil erasure: Devils eaten by the Chainsaw Devil are erased from existence entirely, their names and concepts vanish from the world and memory.
• Heart of the hybrid: As Denji's heart, Pochita powers Chainsaw Man's transformation, regeneration and revival whenever the chest cord is pulled.

Key Relationships

• Denji: His rescuer, partner and beloved human, Pochita gave Denji his heart so the boy could live the ordinary dreams he never had.
• Makima: The hunter who took Denji in, and who has her own deep, secret interest in the Chainsaw Devil itself.
• Power: Part of the chaotic household around Denji. Power treats Pochita like the family pet, and he seems perfectly content with the arrangement.
