About Aki Hayakawa
Aki Hayakawa is a senior Public Safety devil hunter whose whole family was killed by the Gun Devil. Calm, serious and chain-smoking, he keeps the reckless Denji and Power in line while hunting the devil he hates. His contracts cost him years of his own life, and he spends them anyway, revenge first, survival a distant second.
Appearance
Aki is a tall young man with black hair tied in a distinctive topknot, blue eyes and a face usually set in tired disapproval. He wears the Public Safety suit properly, the only one in his household who does, with earrings and a katana at his back, and he is almost always smoking. His routines are part of his look: morning coffee, careful cooking, a cigarette on the balcony. When he uses his contracts the toll shows, fingernails, years, and worse, paid away piece by piece. Aki's neatness is a man holding himself together by habit, one ordinary morning at a time.
Personality
Aki is the adult in every room: disciplined, blunt, dry-humoured and exhausted by his housemates. He began devil hunting for one reason, revenge on the Gun Devil, and describes his own future with open fatalism: people in this job die ugly deaths, and he expects his. What he did not plan for was attachment. Denji and Power were assignments; they became the family he eats breakfast with, and Aki's tragedy is watching his two reasons change places, the revenge that gave his life structure, and the home that gave it meaning. He is kind in the practical ways that matter: feeding people, teaching people, standing between people and devils. He just cannot say any of it out loud.
Background & Story
Aki was a child playing in the snow outside his house when the Gun Devil, a devil so powerful it killed over a million people worldwide in five minutes, passed through, and his home and whole family vanished in an instant. A Public Safety hunter named Himeno found the orphan and eventually recruited him; Aki rose as a serious, contract-heavy hunter, trading pieces of his lifespan to the Fox Devil, the Curse Devil and others for power, all aimed at one target. Assigned to supervise Makima's new recruits, he found himself housing a chainsaw hybrid and a blood fiend. The revenge-obsessed hunter's orderly life became the warmest home in the series, which, in Chainsaw Man, is the most dangerous thing a person can have.
Powers & Abilities
- Fox Devil contract: By offering a piece of his body, Aki can summon the Fox Devil's head to bite and swallow devils whole, a contract that can be withdrawn if abused.
- Curse Devil contract: Using his nail-like sword, Aki can invoke the Curse Devil to kill a marked target, at the price of years of his own lifespan.
- Future Devil contract: In exchange for living in Aki's right eye, the Future Devil lets him see a few seconds into the future during a fight.
- Katana swordsmanship: Aki is a highly trained swordsman whose calm, precise blade work anchors Division 4 in close combat.
Key Relationships
- Denji: His subordinate and housemate, who Aki first treated as a tool and came to protect like a younger brother.
- Power: His other housemate, a fiend he feeds, scolds and, to his own surprise, treats as family.
- Himeno: His partner and mentor in Public Safety, whose teasing devotion and hard lessons shaped the hunter Aki became.
- Makima: His superior, whom Aki admires and loves from a distance, the devotion Makima inspires in him is total and unquestioning.
- Angel Devil: His reluctant partner on later missions, whose laziness Aki manages and whose humanity Aki quietly comes to defend.
