Denji

About Denji

Denji is a teenage devil hunter who spent his childhood in poverty, paying off his dead father's debt to the yakuza. When his pet devil Pochita gives him his heart, Denji comes back as Chainsaw Man, a hybrid with chainsaws bursting from his head and arms. His dreams are heartbreakingly small: good food, a warm bed, a girlfriend.

Appearance

Denji is a lanky teenager with messy blond hair, sharp teeth like a shark's, and tired, baggy eyes that make him look permanently half-feral. As a Public Safety hunter he wears the standard uniform, white shirt, black tie and trousers, usually rumpled, with the tie loose. Pull the cord in his chest and he transforms: his head becomes a long, snarling chainsaw helmet with a roaring blade down the middle, and chainsaws erupt from both forearms, all of it drenched in the blood that fuels him. Even transformed, his body language stays pure Denji, slouched, scrappy and completely unrefined.

Personality

Denji is simple in the way only someone denied everything can be: he wants food he did not have to scavenge, a roof, a bed, and someone to love him. He is crude, impulsive and hilariously honest about his shallowest motives, which makes him an easy character to laugh at, until the story shows what his poverty cost him and the laughter stops. Denji is not stupid; he is uneducated in being a person. His empathy, when it wakes, is total, and his grief is real. The comedy and the tragedy of Chainsaw Man are the same boy: one who would kill the most feared devils alive for a slice of toast with jam, and mean it as the best day of his life.

Background & Story

Denji inherited his father's crushing debt to the yakuza as a child and paid it however he could, selling body parts, eating from bins, and hunting devils with Pochita, the injured Chainsaw Devil he rescued and who became his only friend and family. When the yakuza, puppeteered by a devil, betrayed and killed him, Pochita gave Denji his heart, reviving him as a human-devil hybrid on one condition Denji later learns: show Pochita his dreams. Found by Makima of Public Safety, Denji was offered the first warm bed and real meals of his life in exchange for hunting devils as her subordinate. The boy who dreamed of an ordinary life stepped into the most dangerous job in the world to keep it.

Powers & Abilities

• Chainsaw Man transformation: By pulling the cord in his chest, Denji becomes a hybrid, a chainsaw-headed devil-human with roaring blades from his head and both arms.
• Blood-fuelled regeneration: Drinking blood restarts Denji's engine: as long as he has blood and pulls his cord, he can revive and heal from almost any wound.
• Chainsaw combat: His head and arm saws shred devils at close range, and he uses their chains for movement, grappling and brutal improvisation.
• Pochita's heart: Denji's heart is the Chainsaw Devil itself, the being devils fear most, which is why every devil in the world wants it.

Key Relationships

• Pochita: His pet, best friend and heart, the little Chainsaw Devil who gave his life so Denji could live and dream.
