Yoshimura
From Tokyo Ghoul
Yoshimura is a supporting character in Tokyo Ghoul, the elderly manager of Anteiku who serves coffee to ghouls and humans alike and teaches Kaneki that ghouls are not so different from people. Behind the warmth stands the original One-Eyed Owl. He is voiced by Takayuki Sugō in Japanese and Sean Hennigan in English.
About Yoshimura
Yoshimura is the elderly manager of Anteiku, a kindly old man who serves coffee to ghouls and humans alike and teaches Kaneki that ghouls are not so different from people. Behind the warmth stands one of the most feared ghouls alive, the original One-Eyed Owl, who once stormed the CCG alone. His café is a sanctuary built from a lifetime of regret, love and a daughter he could not raise.
Appearance
Yoshimura is a tall, kindly old man with grey hair, a neat beard and gentle eyes behind small glasses, dressed in Anteiku's manager uniform with a waistcoat and bow tie. He looks exactly like a café proprietor from a quieter century, and that is the achievement of his life. In his ghoul form, the Owl, he is unrecognisable: a huge, one-eyed kakuja of layered kagune armour, a figure from CCG nightmares standing where the old man was.
Personality
Yoshimura is warm, patient and quietly absolute. His philosophy, that ghouls are not so different from humans, and that killing is a choice even for those born to it, is lived, not preached: Anteiku runs on it. He carries enormous guilt over his wife and daughter and channels it into shelter for every stray who reaches his café. He is also pragmatic enough to have been a monster efficiently for decades, and when Anteiku is threatened, the gentleness reveals itself as something he chooses daily over the Owl underneath.
Background & Story
Yoshimura was once Kuzen, a lone cleaner for the organisation V and one of the most dangerous ghouls alive. On a mission he fell in love with Ukina, a human journalist investigating that same organisation; their child, a natural one-eyed ghoul, had to be hidden in the lawless 24th ward to survive, and Ukina died for what she knew. Kuzen built Anteiku, 'a place to return to', in the quiet 20th ward: a café where ghouls could live without hunting, funded by his old skills and staffed by the strays his philosophy attracts. As the One-Eyed Owl he periodically storms the CCG alone to draw their attention away from his daughter's generation, and he takes in the half-ghoul Kaneki as his newest stray.
Powers & Abilities
- Kakuja, the Owl: Yoshimura's kakuja form is a massive armoured kagune body that made him the legendary One-Eyed Owl, strong enough to attack CCG headquarters alone.
- Master Combatant: As V's former cleaner, Yoshimura's technique, experience and control place him among the strongest ghouls alive even without transforming.
Key Relationships
- Eto Yoshimura: His daughter, hidden as a baby and raised by the war he tried to spare her, the centre of his life's regret and hope.
- Ken Kaneki: His newest stray: Yoshimura shelters Kaneki and teaches him Anteiku's way of living without hunting.
- Touka Kirishima: One of the young ghouls raised under Anteiku's roof, her dream of a normal life is his philosophy working.
- Renji Yomo: His old friend and right hand, who runs Anteiku's hardest errands and guards its people.

Who voices Yoshimura?
Takayuki Sugō voices him in Japanese and Sean Hennigan voices him in English.
Why did Yoshimura open Anteiku?
Yoshimura founded Anteiku as a sanctuary where ghouls can live without hunting, feeding on the already-dead, helping strays, and teaching ghouls to coexist with the human world around them.
