Kotaro Amon
From Tokyo Ghoul
Kotaro Amon is a supporting character in Tokyo Ghoul, a top-ranked CCG investigator whose absolute sense of justice is slowly shaken by his repeated clashes with Kaneki. Raised by a priest who turned out to be a ghoul, he becomes the Commission's questioning conscience. He is voiced by Katsuyuki Konishi in Japanese and Mike McFarland in English.
About Kotaro Amon
Kotaro Amon is a top-ranked CCG investigator raised by a priest who turned out to be a ghoul, a wound that forged his absolute sense of justice. Fighting with a huge quinque and a boxer's discipline, he clashes with Kaneki repeatedly, and each meeting shakes his certainty that ghouls are simply evil. His slow, painful questioning of the world he serves makes him the CCG's conscience.
Appearance
Amon is a tall, heavily built man with dark hair, strong features and the bearing of a professional athlete. He wears the CCG's investigator coat over a disciplined frame, trains constantly, and carries his oversized quinque like a weightlifter's bar. His expressions are as unguarded as his build is imposing, frustration, conviction and doubt all show plainly, which makes his slow crisis of faith easy to read long before he admits it to himself.
Personality
Amon is earnest, disciplined and morally serious to a fault. He trains like a monk, judges himself harder than anyone, and begins the story with a child's clean division of the world into justice and evil. His strength as a character is that experience wins: every encounter with ghouls who beg, protect children or spare his life forces him to rebuild his beliefs at personal cost. He is the CCG's conscience in formation, a good man discovering the institution he serves may not be.
Background & Story
Amon was raised in a Catholic orphanage by Donato Porpora, a kind priest who was secretly a ghoul feeding on the children, a discovery that forged Amon's absolutist view of ghouls as evil to be exterminated. He graduated near the top of the CCG Academy and was partnered with the veteran Kureo Mado, whose death in the Fueguchi case he carries as a personal failure. In the field he clashes repeatedly with the ghoul known as Eyepatch, Kaneki, and each encounter cracks his certainty a little more: this ghoul hesitates, pleads, and once spares him. Assigned Akira Mado as his new partner, Amon continues rising through the ranks while the world he was raised to believe in dissolves around him.
Powers & Abilities
- Quinque Combat (Doujima): Amon fights with Doujima, a huge, heavy koukaku quinque whose crushing blows suit his power-lifting build; he later wields upgraded versions as his rank rises.
- Peak Physical Conditioning: Amon's relentless training gives him strength and endurance at the top of the CCG's human range, letting him trade blows with powerful ghouls.
Key Relationships
- Ken Kaneki: The Eyepatch ghoul he fights again and again, the opponent who argues with him mid-battle and refuses to fit everything Amon was taught.
- Kureo Mado: His first partner and mentor, whose death Amon blames himself for and whose worldview he inherits before he outgrows it.
- Akira Mado: His second partner, Kureo's daughter, colder, sharper and initially more certain than him, in an inversion that drives them both.
- Juuzou Suzuya: A fellow investigator whose cheerful damage shows Amon another thing the war does to the people who fight it.
