Touka Kirishima is a ghoul waitress at Anteiku who masks her ferocity with a school uniform and a part-time job. Raised in the 20th ward after losing her parents to investigators, she teaches the hopeless Kaneki how ghouls survive: masks, hunting rules and when to run. Her rabbit mask gives her the CCG codename Rabbit, and her dream of a normal human life, university, coffee, friends, is the series' quiet heart.

Appearance

Touka is a slim teenage girl with dark blue-black hair cut into a bob, long bangs covering the right side of her face, and sharp, defiant eyes. In public she wears her Kiyomi High uniform or Anteiku's waitress dress, presenting as an ordinary, slightly aloof schoolgirl. On the hunt she wears a distinctive rabbit mask, the source of her CCG codename, and her ukaku kagune spreads from her shoulder like a wing of flame, crackling with electricity as it hardens to fire shards.

Personality

Touka is fierce, blunt and fiercely independent, with a temper that flares fastest where her family is concerned. She carries real prejudice against the CCG and little patience for self-pity, Kaneki's weakness enrages her because it mirrors everything she has had to outgrow. Underneath is one of the series' most determined dreamers: Touka studies seriously, works honestly and wants an ordinary life with an intensity most ghouls find naive. Her protectiveness is physical, she throws herself between danger and Hinami, Kaneki and Anteiku without calculation.

Background & Story

Touka grew up in the 20th ward with her father Arata and younger brother Ayato, until investigators killed her father and scattered the children. She found refuge at Anteiku while still young, building a double life: honours-track student by day, waitress and ghoul by night, determined to earn the normal human future, school, university, coffee with friends, that ghouls are not supposed to have. She is the one assigned to teach the hopeless new half-ghoul Kaneki how to survive, a job she approaches with open contempt for his self-pity. A skilled fighter ranked for her speed and her wing, Touka fights investigators with particular fury where her found family is threatened.

• Ukaku Kagune: Touka's ukaku forms a fiery wing from her shoulder that fires hardened shards at high velocity; in :re she develops a second wing and larger projectiles.
