Ken Kaneki
From Tokyo Ghoul
Ken Kaneki is the main character of Tokyo Ghoul, a shy literature student turned into a one-eyed half-ghoul when a ghoul's organs are transplanted into him to save his life. Sheltered by the Anteiku café, he is pulled between the human and ghoul worlds that both claim and hunt him. He is voiced by Natsuki Hanae in Japanese and Austin Tindle in English.
About Ken Kaneki
Ken Kaneki is a shy literature student whose life ends on a first date: the ghoul Rize tries to eat him, and surgeons save him with her organs. Now a one-eyed half-ghoul who can only eat human flesh, he is sheltered by the Anteiku café, pulled between two worlds that both want him dead. Gentle to a fault, he learns through torture and loss to fight for a place where ghouls and humans can live.
Appearance
Kaneki is a slender young man with dark hair and a bookish, unassuming look, usually in plain student clothes. After becoming a half-ghoul he hides his one red ghoul eye, his kakugan, behind a medical eyepatch, and on hunts he wears a distinctive black mask with an exposed-tooth grin designed by Uta. Trauma changes him visibly: after Aogiri's captivity his hair turns white, his nails blacken, and his whole bearing hardens. In :re, as Haise Sasaki, his hair is black-and-white striped and his manner is an investigator's, until the older self starts showing through.
Personality
Kaneki is gentle, self-sacrificing and conflict-averse to a dangerous degree, his mother's teaching that it is better to be hurt than to hurt others becomes his curse, leaving him unable to protect anyone, including himself. He loves literature and finds the words for his feelings in other people's books long before he finds his own. The torture he endures forces a reckoning: he accepts his ghoul side and a colder willingness to fight, but the war between the kind boy and the ruthless survivor never fully resolves, it is the engine of his whole story.
Background & Story
Kaneki is a shy Japanese literature student at Kamii University whose great pleasures are books, coffee and his best friend Hide. A date with the beautiful Rize Kamishiro ends in an alley: she is a ghoul, she tries to eat him, and falling steel beams crush her instead. To save his life, surgeons transplant Rize's kakuhou, the organ that produces a ghoul's kagune, into Kaneki, making him the first artificial one-eyed ghoul. He wakes unable to eat human food, starving for flesh he refuses to take, until the staff of the Anteiku coffee shop, ghouls living quietly among humans, take him in and teach him their rules: masks, coffee, restraint, and how to survive the CCG investigators who hunt his kind. A run-in with the militant ghoul group Aogiri Tree puts Kaneki in the hands of a torturer, and what he survives there changes him permanently.
