About Hinami Fueguchi
Hinami Fueguchi is a gentle young ghoul who loses both parents to CCG investigators and is taken in by Anteiku. A prodigy reader with unusually sharp senses and two types of kagune inherited from her parents, she grows from a frightened child hiding behind books into a brave young woman who chooses her own side in the war. Her bond with Touka, older sister in all but blood, endures across both series.
Appearance
Hinami is a small, gentle-looking girl with chin-length light-brown hair, soft features and large, sad eyes. She dresses in modest, pretty clothes chosen at Anteiku and carries herself quietly, usually with a book in reach. When her kagune manifests it is startling from so small a frame: elegant petal-like koukaku shields combined with her father's rinkaku tails, a form that shows both her parents living on in her.
Personality
Hinami is gentle, bookish and extraordinarily empathetic, a child who apologises to the world for existing in it. Losing her parents does not harden her; it makes her protective, and her bravery, when it comes, is the defensive kind: standing between danger and the people she loves. She adores stories and language, learning kanji with the devotion other ghouls give to fighting, and her growth into a young woman who chooses her own side in the war is one of :re's quiet through-lines.
Background & Story
Hinami lived quietly in the 20th ward with her ghoul parents, who taught her to read people kindly and human food carefully. CCG investigators hunted the family; her father was killed first, and then her mother sacrificed herself so Hinami could escape, a loss she partly witnessed. Taken in by Anteiku, she is sheltered by Touka and taught to read by Kaneki, becoming the café's little sister. Even as a child she is unusually gifted, her senses are sharper than most adult ghouls' and she inherits both parents' kagune types, but what she wants from that strength, as she grows up in :re, is entirely her own decision to make.
Powers & Abilities
- Dual Kagune: Hinami uniquely wields two kagune types, her mother's koukaku shields for defence and her father's rinkaku tails for attack, a combination most ghouls never develop.
- Heightened Senses: Her hearing and sense of smell are exceptional even among ghouls, letting her identify individuals, read situations and detect danger at remarkable range.
Key Relationships
- Touka Kirishima: Her protector and older sister in all but blood, Touka's fierce care gives Hinami a home, and Hinami's gentleness gives Touka someone to be soft for.
- Ken Kaneki: Her 'big brother' at Anteiku, who teaches her to read and whose kindness she repays with lifelong loyalty.
- Kureo Mado: The investigator who killed her mother, and whom young Hinami confronts in one of the first series' most painful scenes.
- Yoshimura: The Anteiku manager who shelters her, the closest thing to a grandfather her new family has.
