About Ukyo Saionji
Ukyo Saionji is a former submarine sonar operator whose hearing is so sharp he can track footsteps, heartbeats and lies through walls. Recruited as Tsukasa's archer, he is a pacifist who quietly works to end the stone wars without bloodshed. Calm and kind, Ukyo becomes the Kingdom's ears, and his condition for loyalty is the series' moral compass: not one person dies.
Appearance
Ukyo is a calm, slim 173 cm with light, ash-toned hair often worn under a cap or hood, and a gentle, unreadable expression. He carries a bow and moves quietly, a man who experiences the world ears-first. His petrification scar runs across his face. In the stone world he wears practical clothes suited to scouting, and he has a habit of tilting his head, listening to things nobody else can hear: a heartbeat through a wall, a lie inside a steady voice. His stillness is not peace, it is attention.
Personality
Ukyo is kind, steady and quietly principled. A sonarman's trained hearing made him value life in a specific way: he has heard too many heartbeats to treat any of them lightly. Serving Tsukasa, he secretly draws his bow to miss killing shots and works towards the one outcome he actually wants, an end to the fighting where nobody dies. When he defects to the Kingdom, it is on that single condition, and Senku accepts it as strategy as much as morality. Ukyo becomes the Kingdom's conscience with ears: calm, funny in a dry way, and immovable on the one thing that matters to him.
Background & Story
In the old world Ukyo served in the Maritime Self-Defense Force as a submarine sonar operator, developing hearing that borders on the superhuman. Tsukasa revived him as the empire's scout and archer, but Ukyo, hearing the heartbeats of the people he was ordered to hunt, could not become a killer. He began quietly sabotaging lethal outcomes, and when the Kingdom of Science offered a path to ending the war without deaths, he changed sides. From then on his hearing serves science: guiding ships, detecting enemies, operating the Kingdom's communications. In a war between two visions of humanity, Ukyo is the proof that strength can choose mercy and still be strength.
Powers & Abilities
- Superhuman Hearing: Ukyo can hear heartbeats, footsteps and whispers through walls and across distances, and detect lies from the changes in a person's pulse and breathing.
- Archery: Tsukasa's chosen archer, his shots are precise enough that he can choose, deliberately, exactly how much harm each arrow does.
- Sonar and Communications: His old-world sonar training makes him the Kingdom's natural operator for its listening devices, ship navigation and battlefield communications.
Key Relationships
- Senku Ishigami: The leader whose no-deaths condition Ukyo negotiated, and whose plans give his hearing its purpose.
- Tsukasa Shishio: His former commander, whose empire Ukyo served while quietly refusing to kill for it.
- Hyoga: His former comrade in Tsukasa's elite, the cold killer whose philosophy is everything Ukyo rejects.
- Gen Asagiri: A kindred specialist, Gen reads faces, Ukyo reads heartbeats, and between them few lies survive.
