Gen Asagiri

From Dr. Stone

Quick Answer

Gen Asagiri is a stage mentalist in Dr. Stone, a bestselling psychology author revived by Tsukasa and sent to confirm Senku's death, who promptly defects to the side offering cola. His weapons are words: negotiation, deception and morale, deployed with a showman's smile. He is voiced by Kengo Kawanishi in Japanese and Brandon McInnis in English.

About Gen Asagiri

Gen Asagiri is a stage mentalist and bestselling psychology author, revived by Tsukasa and sent to confirm Senku's death, who promptly defects to the side offering cola. Gen's weapons are words: negotiation, deception, crowd-reading and morale, deployed with a showman's smile. He calls himself the most superficial man alive, yet he risks his life for the Kingdom again and again. In a war of ideas, Gen is Senku's silver tongue.

Appearance

Gen is a slim 175 cm with two-toned hair, dark with pale, almost white sections, worn long enough to fall artfully around a sly, smiling face. His petrification scar runs across one side of his face. He dresses with a performer's flair even in the stone world, and his body language is pure stagecraft: flourishes, bows, playing cards appearing from nowhere. His smile rarely reaches a place you can trust, which is exactly how he likes it, and exactly why his rare sincere moments hit so hard.

Personality

Gen calls himself the most superficial man in the world, and he is lying, in the professional sense. A mentalist's job is reading people, and Gen reads everyone: crowds, enemies, his own side. He joined the Kingdom for a bottle of cola and stayed because Senku's world is the one where people like him, talkers, tricksters, the un-strong, get to matter. Again and again he risks his life for that world while insisting he is only in it for himself. Gen is the series' argument that civilisation runs on trust and stories as much as on machines, and he is its master of both.

Background & Story

In the old world Gen was a famous mentalist and author. Tsukasa revived him for his skills and sent him to verify reports of Senku's death. Finding Senku very much alive, and building wonders, Gen made his choice, sealed with homemade cola: he returned to Tsukasa with a false report and became the Kingdom's double agent and negotiator. Through the stone wars his performances, lies and readings of the enemy's hearts repeatedly do what no weapon could, turning battles before they start and keeping morale alive when the Kingdom is outnumbered. Gen's silver tongue becomes one of science's sharpest tools.

Powers & Abilities

  • Mentalism and Cold Reading: Gen can read people's emotions, intentions and lies from tiny cues, and perform the same tricks in reverse, planting the impressions he wants others to believe.
  • Negotiation and Deception: His words have misdirected armies, bluffed enemies and negotiated truces; in the stone wars he is the Kingdom's first line of attack.
  • Voice Impressions: A performer's skill he weaponises, imitating voices to deceive listeners, including over the stone world's first telephones.

Key Relationships

  • Senku Ishigami: His leader and favourite audience, Senku is one of the few people Gen cannot fool, which Gen respects enormously.
  • Tsukasa Shishio: The ruler who revived him and was betrayed by him, Gen's false report about Senku's death shaped the whole stone war.
  • Chrome: A favourite target for teasing, and a teammate whose sincerity Gen quietly protects.
  • Ukyo Saionji: A fellow specialist in reading people, hearing against psychology, and a kindred spirit in wanting a bloodless end to the wars.
