Toshiro Hitsugaya
From Bleach
Toshiro Hitsugaya is a supporting character in Bleach, the white-haired prodigy who became captain of Squad 10 younger than anyone in the Soul Society's history, wielder of the ice dragon Hyorinmaru. He is voiced by Romi Park in Japanese and Steve Staley in English.
About Toshiro Hitsugaya
Toshiro Hitsugaya is the youngest captain in the Soul Society's history, a white-haired prodigy who leads Squad 10. Serious far beyond his years, he hates being treated like a child, especially by his easygoing lieutenant Rangiku. His zanpakuto Hyorinmaru commands ice and weather, making him the strongest ice-type wielder among the Soul Reapers, and his calm judgement makes him a captain others quietly rely on.
Appearance
Toshiro is very short for a captain, 133 cm, with spiky white hair, turquoise eyes and a young face that makes strangers mistake him for a child, to his lasting irritation. He wears the Squad 10 captain's haori over his shihakusho, often with a green sash strap across his chest that holds Hyorinmaru on his back; the sword is long enough that its tip nearly reaches the ground behind him. When his Bankai matures, ice wings, a tail and claws reshape his silhouette into a small dragon.
Personality
Toshiro is the most grown-up person in most rooms he walks into, which is awkward, because he also looks about twelve. Address him as Captain Hitsugaya. He'll correct you every time. He does the paperwork his lieutenant dodges, thinks three moves ahead in a fight, and keeps his temper on a very short, very professional leash. The leash slips in predictable places. Tease him about his height and watch the temperature drop. Threaten Momo Hinamori, his childhood friend, and the strategy goes out the window entirely. The rest of the Gotei 13 trusts his judgement precisely because that almost never happens.
Background & Story
Toshiro grew up in the Junrinan district of the Rukongai with his grandmother and his friend Momo Hinamori. His spiritual power was so strong it leaked out in his sleep as freezing air that endangered his grandmother, the push that sent him to the academy, where he graduated in record time and rose through Squad 10 to become the youngest captain in the Gotei 13's history. During the Soul Society crisis he was among the first to suspect something was rotten behind Rukia's rushed execution, investigating when others obeyed. His ice and his instincts have served on the front line of every war since.
Powers & Abilities
- Hyorinmaru: The strongest ice-type Zanpakuto, its Shikai summons a dragon of ice and water and lets him command the weather itself.
- Bankai: Daiguren Hyorinmaru: His Bankai gives him wings, a tail and claws of ice and a huge boost in power; when fully matured it can flash-freeze anything he points at.
- Tenso Jurin: Control over the weather in the surrounding area, turning storms and moisture into weapons, dangerous enough that he avoids using it near allies.
Key Relationships
- Rangiku Matsumoto: His lieutenant, lazy, teasing and utterly dependable in a crisis; their bickering partnership runs Squad 10.
- Ichigo Kurosaki: An ally he respects despite Ichigo's habit of calling him by his first name, which he corrects every single time.
