Rukia Kuchiki

About Rukia Kuchiki

Rukia Kuchiki is the Soul Reaper who gave her powers to Ichigo and changed his life. Adopted into the noble Kuchiki clan, she serves in Squad 13 and carries herself with quiet discipline, though her drawings are famously terrible. Small in height and huge in resolve, Rukia fights with Sode no Shirayuki, a beautiful ice blade, and rises to lead her squad as its captain.

Appearance

Rukia is petite, only 144 cm, with short black hair usually cut to her jaw, a strand falling between her violet eyes. She wears the standard black shihakusho of the Soul Reapers, and when stationed in the living world she adopts school uniforms and modern clothes with visible enthusiasm. Her Zanpakuto, Sode no Shirayuki, is known as one of the most beautiful in the Soul Society: when released, blade, guard, hilt and its long ribbon all turn pure white, like something carved from snow.

Personality

Rukia carries herself like proper Soul Society nobility, all posture and duty. Then the moment passes and she's sketching another dreadful crayon diagram of the spirit world, or quietly losing her mind over rabbit merchandise. She grew up with nothing in the Rukongai, then got adopted into a great clan that kept her at arm's length, so folding her feelings away became second nature. Ichigo's group thawed her out. Around them she's dry, teasing and stubbornly loyal, the friend who will talk you out of despair at midnight and be standing next to you in the fight by morning.

Background & Story

Rukia was born in the poorest districts of the Rukongai, where she grew up stealing to survive alongside Renji Abarai and a small gang of children. When she showed spiritual talent she entered the Soul Reaper academy, and there the noble Kuchiki clan adopted her at Byakuya's request, a rise that cost her Renji's easy friendship and left her grateful and isolated at once. Assigned to patrol Karakura Town, she was wounded fighting a Hollow and made the desperate choice to transfer her powers to Ichigo Kurosaki. The Soul Society sentenced her to death for it, and Ichigo's rescue forced her to accept that her life was worth saving. She regained her powers, served through the wars that followed and eventually rose to lead Squad 13 as its captain.

Powers & Abilities

• Sode no Shirayuki: Her ice-type Zanpakuto, an all-white blade whose dances freeze the air and ground around her in circles of ice.
• Tsukishiro: The first dance of her Shikai, everything inside a circle of light she draws on the ground freezes solid.
• Bankai: Hakka no Togame: A beautiful, dangerous Bankai that drops her body's temperature to absolute zero, freezing whatever she touches, at real risk to herself.
• Kido: Rukia is a skilled and precise user of Kido spells, the Soul Reapers' demon arts, for binding, healing support and attack.

Key Relationships

• Ichigo Kurosaki: The human she gave her powers to; their partnership, part friendship, part constant bickering, anchors the series.
• Byakuya Kuchiki: Her adoptive brother and captain-class protector, whose cold distance slowly became genuine brotherly care.
• Renji Abarai: Her childhood friend from the Rukongai slums; they drifted apart when she was adopted and rebuilt their bond as fellow officers.
• Orihime Inoue: A close friend in the living world, Rukia is one of the few who treats Orihime's feelings and fears completely seriously.
