About Byakuya Kuchiki

Byakuya Kuchiki is the proud captain of Squad 6 and head of the noble Kuchiki clan, as well as Rukia's brother-in-law and adoptive brother. Cold, elegant and bound by duty, he once let the law demand Rukia's execution, and Ichigo's defiance slowly taught him to put family first. His bankai, Senbonzakura Kageyoshi, scatters a thousand blades like falling cherry blossoms, beautiful and utterly lethal.

Appearance

Byakuya is a tall, refined man of 180 cm with long black hair worn with the white kenseikan hairpieces that mark the Kuchiki head, and grey eyes that rarely show emotion. He wears the captain's white haori over his shihakusho with a pale scarf, a priceless heirloom woven for the clan's head, and white gloves. Everything about him is composed and exact, from his posture to the way Senbonzakura's released blades drift around him like petals on water.

Personality

The law comes first with Byakuya. It has to. He's a clan head and a captain, and he built his whole life on the idea that rules hold even when they hurt, especially when they hurt. That thinking once put him on the wrong side of his own sister's execution, and losing to Ichigo cracked it open. There's feeling under the ice, plenty of it. He keeps promises like other people keep grudges: to his parents, to his late wife, eventually to Rukia herself. The warmth that comes out later in the story is still measured out in teaspoons, but it's real, dry jokes and all.

Background & Story

Byakuya was raised as heir to the Kuchiki, one of the Soul Society's four great noble houses, trained from childhood to become both clan head and a captain. Against clan custom he married Hisana, a commoner from the Rukongai, and when she died he honoured her last wish by finding and adopting her lost sister, Rukia, breaking the rules twice for love, then never again. When Rukia was sentenced to death, Byakuya chose the law over his promise and fought Ichigo to uphold it. Defeated, he finally admitted the conflict aloud and saved Rukia himself, beginning a slow change into a captain who protects his people first.

Powers & Abilities

• Senbonzakura: His Zanpakuto dissolves into a thousand tiny blades that shine like cherry blossom petals as they cut everything around the enemy.
• Bankai: Senbonzakura Kageyoshi: His Bankai multiplies those blades a thousandfold, a storm of petal-blades he guides by hand or by thought alone.
• Shukei: Hakuteiken: The final form of his Bankai, gathering every blade into one pair of brilliant white wings and a single devastating sword.
• Kido and Shunpo: Byakuya is a master of high-level Kido and one of the fastest Flash Step users among the captains, trained by Yoruichi in his youth.

• Rukia Kuchiki: His adoptive sister, taken in for his late wife's sake; learning to protect her openly is his biggest change in the series.
