About Ichigo Kurosaki

Ichigo is a Karakura Town teenager who can see ghosts, and who becomes a substitute Soul Reaper after taking a wounded reaper's powers to protect his family. With his huge sword Zangetsu, a stubborn sense of duty and a talent for annoying every authority figure he meets, he ends up defending the living world and the Soul Society alike. Under the scowl is a simple rule he never breaks: if someone he cares about is in danger, he goes.

Appearance

Ichigo is a tall, lean teenager with spiky orange hair, a natural colour he has been teased about since childhood, and brown eyes. His usual look pairs a school uniform or casual shirts with a near-permanent scowl that makes him look angrier than he usually is. As a Soul Reaper he wears the standard black shihakusho, usually with the sleeves pushed up, and carries Zangetsu across his back: in its released form an oversized black blade with no guard, wrapped at the handle. After the seventeen-month gap in the story he stands noticeably taller and his hair sits a little longer.

Personality

People who don't know Ichigo tend to file him under 'delinquent'. The scowl, the orange hair, the fights. His friends could tell you he studies hard, keeps his word and says thank you to teachers. Both versions miss the point a bit. What actually drives him is simpler: if someone in front of him is in danger, he moves. No weighing the odds first, no checking whether the person deserves it. He's done it for strangers and for former enemies. Losing his mother when he was nine wired that into him. He couldn't protect her, so he's been trying to be strong enough to protect everybody else ever since, and he carries the failures hard.

Background & Story

Ichigo grew up in Karakura Town, the eldest child of clinic owner Isshin Kurosaki and his wife Masaki, with younger twin sisters Karin and Yuzu. He could see ghosts from childhood, a gift that set him apart. When he was nine, Masaki was killed protecting him from a Hollow, a loss that left the family quietly rearranged around her empty place at the table. At fifteen, a Hollow attacked his home and a wounded Soul Reaper, Rukia Kuchiki, transferred her powers to him so he could fight it. Ichigo took on her duties hunting Hollows in Karakura, and when the Soul Society came to punish Rukia for giving away her powers, he trained, invaded the Seireitei with his friends and fought captain-level opponents to win her back, the adventure that turned a substitute into someone both worlds rely on.

• Zangetsu: Ichigo's Zanpakuto, an unusually large blade that stays in its released form, built for direct, powerful cuts rather than tricks.
• Getsuga Tensho: His signature attack, a dense blast of spiritual energy fired from the edge of his blade in a sweeping arc.
• Bankai: Tensa Zangetsu: Ichigo's Bankai compresses his power into a sleek black katana and a tattered coat, trading size for extreme speed and strength.

• Hollow Mask: Drawing on the Hollow power inside him, Ichigo can pull a white mask over his face for a short, sharp burst of speed and strength.
