Roswaal L Mathers

About Roswaal L Mathers

Roswaal is the clown-like margrave who employs Subaru, Emilia's backer in the royal selection and a magician of unsettling knowledge. His sing-song speech and painted smile hide a centuries-old obsession guided by a gospel that predicts the future. Whether he is Subaru's patron, puppet-master or enemy is a question every arc re-asks.

Appearance

Roswaal is a tall, striking man with long indigo hair, mismatched yellow and blue eyes and theatrical makeup that gives him a clownish air, dressed in flamboyant noble clothing. The performance is deliberate and total: painted smile, sing-song stretched vowels, elegant gestures. Underneath it is one of Lugunica's most powerful mages and a man who has been playing a very long game for a very long time.

Personality

Roswaal is theatrical, manipulative and eerily cheerful, treating crises like stage directions. He speaks in a drawn-out sing-song, smiles while delivering threats, and arranges people, including his own household, as pieces in a plan centuries in the making. His devotion to his teacher, the Witch Echidna, governs everything: Emilia's candidacy, Subaru's employment and the mansion's dangers are all steps in a design only he and his gospel can see. Whether that makes him a villain or a desperate romantic depends on the loop.

Background & Story

Roswaal L Mathers is the current head of the Mathers family, margrave of Lugunica's western border and the kingdom's court mage. Secretly he is a soul far older than his body. He has transferred himself through generations of his own descendants in pursuit of a single goal: reviving his teacher, Echidna. Guided by a copy of the Gospel that shows a version of the future, he backs Emilia's royal candidacy and hires a strange, death-haunted boy named Subaru, whose impossible knowledge fits his book's predictions disturbingly well.

Powers & Abilities

• Elite multi-element magic: Roswaal is Lugunica's strongest mage, master of fire, water, wind, earth, yin and yang magic at the highest level.
• Flight and combat magic: He fights from the air with overwhelming spell power, able to battle armies and great beasts alone.
• The Gospel: His copy of Echidna's book of future knowledge lets him plan years ahead, though its predictions have limits he refuses to accept.

Key Relationships

• Emilia: His candidate in the royal selection, her throne is a step in his centuries-old design.
• Subaru Natsuki: His employee and a variable his gospel describes; Roswaal tests, uses and occasionally protects him.
• Ram: His maid, whose life depends on the mana he supplies; her absolute loyalty is one of his certainties.
• Beatrice: The library spirit his family has sheltered for 400 years under his teacher's arrangements.
