Reinhard van Astrea

About Reinhard van Astrea

Reinhard is the Sword Saint of Lugunica, the strongest knight in the world, blessed with so many divine protections that he is less a man than a natural law. Perfectly polite and genuinely kind, he serves Felt with total loyalty. His existence quietly warps every battle he enters, and burdens his broken family, the Astreas, just as much.

Appearance

Reinhard is a strikingly handsome young knight with fiery red hair and blue eyes, wearing the white uniform of the Royal Guard with the Dragon Sword Reid at his hip. He carries himself with perfect, easy courtesy that makes his power easy to forget, until he moves, and a fight that was overwhelming a room of veterans is simply over. Even monsters hesitate when the Sword Saint draws breath.

Personality

Reinhard is genuinely kind, humble and dutiful, the perfect knight, which is precisely his tragedy. His family is broken by what he is: a grandmother killed by the White Whale, a grandfather who blames him, a father who hates him, all orbiting the divine protections he never asked for. Reinhard serves others completely and himself not at all, and his loyalty to Felt, the first person to treat him as a person rather than a weapon, is absolute.

Background & Story

Reinhard was born into House Astrea, Lugunica's line of Sword Saints, and inherited the Divine Protection of the Sword Saint as a small child, along with dozens of other blessings that keep accumulating. His strength ended the civil conflicts of his childhood and made him the kingdom's ultimate deterrent, while quietly destroying his family: his grandmother Theresia died fighting the White Whale, and his grandfather Wilhelm holds Reinhard's inherited blessing partly responsible. Working as a royal guard in the capital, he rescued a slum thief named Felt, and discovered the royal insignia glowing in her hand.

Powers & Abilities

• Divine Protection of the Sword Saint: Reinhard inherits the Sword Saint's blessing, making him the world's strongest swordsman; the Dragon Sword Reid only leaves its sheath for a worthy opponent.
• Countless divine protections: Dozens of blessings, against projectiles, magic, curses and more, accumulate on Reinhard, making him nearly impossible to harm.
• Superhuman senses and strength: His base physical abilities exceed any normal knight's, letting him end battles in moments.

Key Relationships

• Felt: His candidate and the first person to treat him as himself; he serves her with total loyalty.
• Wilhelm van Astrea: His grandfather, whose grief over Theresia stands between them despite their mutual respect.
• Subaru Natsuki: A strange commoner Reinhard respects for his courage, one of the few people who treats the Sword Saint casually.
