Crusch Karsten

About Crusch Karsten

Crusch is the duchess leading House Karsten and a royal candidate, a commanding woman whose divine protection lets her read the wind of lies in people's hearts. Honourable and direct, she allies with Emilia's camp against the White Whale and the Witch Cult. What Gluttony's attack later costs her becomes one of the war's cruellest wounds.

Appearance

Crusch is an elegant young noblewoman with long green hair and amber eyes, carrying herself in military-style dress and a sword with the bearing of a commander rather than a courtier. She is often mistaken for a man at first glance by strangers, her posture, voice and directness are all soldierly. In the field she leads from the front, and her ground dragon Patrasche is rarely far away.

Personality

Crusch is honourable, direct and driven by a single conviction: Lugunica has grown lazy leaning on its covenant with the Dragon, and the kingdom must learn to stand on its own feet. She cannot abide lies, her blessing lets her hear them, and she respects strength and honesty in allies and enemies alike. Her alliance with Emilia's camp against the White Whale is built on that respect. Her composure makes the cruelty of what Gluttony later takes from her land even harder.

Background & Story

Crusch is the head of House Karsten, one of Lugunica's great noble families, raised to lead and educated as a commander. As a royal candidate she campaigns on ending the kingdom's dependence on the Divine Dragon Volcanica. When Subaru brings her camp intelligence about the White Whale, the beast that killed the previous Sword Saint's party, Crusch commits her private army to the hunt, forging the alliance between the Karsten and Emilia camps that becomes the backbone of the fight against the Witch Cult.

Powers & Abilities

• Divine protection of wind reading: Crusch can read the 'wind' of people's emotions and detect lies, making deception against her almost impossible.
• Wind magic and swordsmanship: She fights with wind magic, including the invisible wind blade technique, combined with trained sword skill.
• Command: As head of House Karsten she leads a private army and commands the White Whale subjugation force alongside Subaru's alliance.

Key Relationships

• Felix Argyle: Her knight and closest confidant since childhood, the person who knows the private Crusch behind the commander.
• Wilhelm van Astrea: Her butler and sword, whose hunt for the White Whale she made her own army's cause.
• Subaru Natsuki: Her ally against the White Whale and the Witch Cult, whose honesty under her lie-reading wind earned her respect.
