Rachel
From Tower of God
Rachel is the girl who taught Bam language and stories beneath the Tower in Tower of God, then left him to chase the stars at its top. She is voiced by Saori Hayami in Japanese and Valerie Rose Lohman in English.
About Rachel
Rachel is the girl who taught Bam language, stories and hope in the darkness beneath the Tower, then left him to chase the stars at its top. Ordinary where Bam is miraculous, her hunger to be chosen and special drives the story's most painful betrayal. Whether she is villain, victim or mirror of everyone climbing is Tower of God's central question.
Appearance
Rachel is an ordinary-looking girl with long, wavy light-blonde hair, freckles and amber eyes, usually in a plain dress: deliberately unremarkable beside the Tower's monsters, princesses and Great Family heirs. That ordinariness is the point of her design: Rachel has no special blood, no legendary weapon and no striking beauty, and she knows exactly how the Tower values people like her. Her expression most often carries a soft, wistful sadness, especially when she talks about the stars. It is the face of someone who has decided that the world above the darkness owes her a different life.
Personality
Rachel is gentle in manner and ruthless in desire. She is not strong, talented or chosen in any way the Tower respects, and she knows it. Her hunger to be special anyway is the most human motivation in the story, and the most corrosive. She can be genuinely kind; she was Bam's teacher and his first warmth. She can also calculate, in the moment it matters most, exactly what her dream is worth and what someone else's is not. Whether she is villain, victim or a mirror held up to everyone climbing is the question Tower of God is built around, and the story refuses to settle it cheaply.
Background & Story
Rachel was Bam's whole world. In the cave beneath the Tower she taught the boy who knew nothing (language, stories, manners, the names of things) and told him about the stars at the top of the Tower, the thing she wanted to see more than anything. When the Tower chose her, she went, leaving Bam behind; when Bam forced the door and followed, the two climbed the same floors on separate paths. What Rachel wants is simple to say and ruthless in practice: to reach the top, see the stars and become someone who matters, someone chosen. The ordinary girl in a Tower of miracles will pay prices for that wish that the miracles never have to.
Powers & Abilities
- Light Bearer: Rachel climbs as a light bearer, operating lighthouses to scout and support her team, a back-line role suited to a climber without a fighter's gifts.
Key Relationships
- Twenty-Fifth Bam: The boy she raised in the dark and left behind, his whole climb is chasing her, and her whole climb is outrunning what she owes him.
- Khun Aguero Agnis: The strategist who distrusts her from their first meeting, Khun's suspicion of Rachel is one of the few judgements he never revises.
- Hansung Yu: The test director who quietly arranges Rachel's path upward after the second floor's final test. Hansung helps her climb for reasons entirely his own.
