Hansung Yu is the coffee-obsessed test director of the second floor, a Ranker whose lazy smile hides deep involvement in the Tower's secret movements. He manipulates Bam's team through the final test and has his own reasons for helping FUG's plans along. Almost nothing about him, his age, side or goal, is what it first seems.

Appearance

Hansung Yu is a slight, youthful-looking man with blond hair and sleepy, amused eyes, usually in neat robes with a cup of instant coffee never far from his hand, the uniform of a man performing laziness. His smile is his most consistent feature and his least informative one. Everything about his presentation says harmless functionary: the coffee, the drawl, the apparent indifference to the Regulars dying in his tests. The performance is the point. Hansung has been playing a deeper game than anyone on the second floor, and the coffee is part of the costume.

Personality

Hansung is a manipulator of the first order who performs being a minor bureaucrat. He is playful, cryptic and patient, speaks in teasing half-answers and treats Regulars' lives as pieces in tests whose real purpose he never explains. Beneath the act sits conviction: he serves a cause inside the Tower's hidden politics and has arranged his whole career around being underestimated in the right place. His fondness for Bam's group seems genuine, in his way. He simply expresses fondness by designing ordeals for people and watching what they do inside them.

Background & Story

Hansung Yu directs the tests of the Tower's second floor, the Floor of Tests, where Bam's group is examined, sorted and thinned. A Ranker with a lazy smile and a bottomless supply of instant coffee, he designs tests that probe more than strength (loyalty, judgement, willingness to sacrifice) and he takes a particular interest in the Irregular boy and the team forming around him. His final test is engineered with unusual care, and his reasons are his own: Hansung is connected to movements inside the Tower that regard Bam as something far more important than a promising Regular. Almost nothing about him (his age, his side or his goal) is what it first seems.
