Kenya Kobayashi

About Kenya Kobayashi

Kenya Kobayashi is Satoru's classmate in 1988, a clever, calm boy who reads people the way other children read comics. He quietly notices that his friend Satoru is suddenly different, braver, kinder and strangely knowledgeable, and chooses to help him protect Kayo without demanding the impossible truth. Kenya becomes Satoru's most important ally in changing the past.

Appearance

Kenya is a ten-year-old boy with a calm, observant expression and light hair, usually a step back from the group's noise, watching, reading the room. He has the stillness of the smartest kid in class, the one teachers trust and other children instinctively consult.

Personality

Kenya is intelligent, measured and quietly brave. He is the first of the children to sense that Satoru has changed, braver, kinder, strangely knowledgeable, and his response defines him: he does not demand an explanation he can tell would sound impossible. He simply helps. Kenya's loyalty is a decision made with open eyes, which is why Satoru leans on him more than anyone in 1988.

Background & Story

Kenya is one of Satoru's classmates in their Hokkaido elementary school in 1988, a top student and the group's reader of people. When the returned Satoru begins his urgent, unexplained campaign to keep Kayo included and safe, Kenya watches, deduces more than a child should be able to, and offers his help without conditions. He becomes Satoru's most important ally in changing the past, the friend who guards the group's plans, watches over Kayo, and carries an adult-sized share of a secret he has only half been told.

Key Relationships

• Satoru Fujinuma: His friend, whose sudden change Kenya notices first, and whom he helps protect Kayo without demanding the truth.
• Kayo Hinazuki: The classmate Satoru's group gathers around; Kenya's quiet support is part of what makes her feel safe.
