About Kazu
Kazu is one of Satoru's classmates in 1988, the loud, funny member of their friendship group who is always ready with a joke or a game. He helps turn the children's hideout into a real base and treats Kayo as one of their own. Through Kazu and the others, Satoru rediscovers something he had forgotten: he was never truly alone.
Appearance
Kazu is a cheerful, energetic ten-year-old, usually the loudest presence in any scene the group shares, mid-joke, mid-game, or mid-charge toward whatever the afternoon holds. He looks like what he is: the friend who makes a group feel like a group.
Personality
Kazu is loud, funny and warm-hearted, the group's engine of ordinary happiness. He teases, he plays, he treats Kayo as one of their own from the moment Satoru brings her in. Through Kazu and the others, Satoru rediscovers something he had forgotten as a lonely adult: he was never truly alone, he had simply stopped remembering afternoons like these.
Background & Story
Kazu is one of Satoru's elementary school classmates in their Hokkaido town in 1988, part of the close group, Satoru, Kayo, Kenya, Hiromi and Osamu, that builds a secret hideout and fills the winter afternoons. When Satoru returns to 1988 and gathers the group around Kayo, Kazu's easy acceptance does quiet, essential work: Kayo is not a project to him, just a new friend. His jokes are part of the childhood Satoru is fighting to give back to all of them.
Key Relationships
- Satoru Fujinuma: His friend, whose renewed warmth in 1988 Kazu matches joke for joke, never knowing why it deepened.
- Osamu: His fellow classmate and partner in the group's everyday comedy.
