Hange Zoë

About Hange Zoë

Hange Zoë is a Survey Corps squad leader who studies Titans with wild enthusiasm, naming captured specimens and risking everything to understand them. Behind the jokes and manic energy sits a sharp scientist and a brave commander who steps up when the Corps needs leadership most. Hange's curiosity is rare in a world that mostly fears Titans, and it often produces the breakthroughs everyone else missed.

Appearance

Hange has messy brown hair usually tied in a high ponytail, brown eyes behind rectangular glasses, later an eyepatch over one eye, and an expression that swings between manic excitement and sharp focus. Of average height at 170 cm, Hange wears the Survey Corps uniform slightly dishevelled, often with shirts untucked after long nights of research. Around Titans, Hange's whole face lights up in a way that alarms new recruits almost as much as the Titans do.

Personality

Hange is exuberant, obsessive and fearless about the one thing everyone else dreads: Titans. Where other soldiers see monsters, Hange sees questions, naming captured specimens, telling them stories and risking limbs to observe them up close. The enthusiasm is not madness, it is method, and it yields knowledge nobody else obtains. In command Hange proves shrewd and humane, able to interrogate, negotiate and make brutal calls when needed. Grief hits Hange hard each time comrades die, but the curiosity that defines them always returns: understanding is how they honour the dead.

Background & Story

Hange joined the Survey Corps with a conventional hatred of Titans, until one day, kicking a severed Titan head in frustration, they were struck by how impossibly light it was, and hatred turned into burning questions. Hange pushed the Corps toward capturing Titans alive for study, an eccentricity command tolerated because the results kept saving lives: Titan physiology, weaknesses and behaviour all advanced through Hange's experiments. As squad leader, Hange works at Erwin's right hand, combining field command with research. When the story's scope widens beyond the walls, it is repeatedly Hange who interrogates prisoners, tests new weapons like the Thunder Spears, and pieces together what humanity is really facing.

Powers & Abilities

• Titan Research: Hange's experiments on captured Titans reveal key truths about their bodies, activity cycles and weaknesses that shape Corps strategy.
• Thunder Spear Development: Hange leads the testing and deployment of Thunder Spears, the explosive weapons that let soldiers fight armoured Titans.
• Combat Command: An experienced squad leader, Hange fights with standard blades and gear at veteran level while directing research and battle at once.

Key Relationships

• Erwin Smith: Hange's commander, who indulges the research others mock because he sees its value, and who trusts Hange above almost anyone.
• Levi Ackerman: A comrade whose disgust at Hange's Titan experiments is matched only by his trust in Hange's results.
• Eren Yeager: Hange's most important subject and ally, whose Titan is studied, with his cooperation and occasional alarm, for humanity's benefit.
