Ha Jinsung

About Ha Jinsung

Jinsung is a High Ranker of the Ha Family and a feared FUG elder who trained the slayer candidate Viole, teaching him martial arts and, unexpectedly, treating him like a grandson. His affection for his student puts him at odds with FUG's own plans for their weapon. Few people in the Tower are more dangerous, or more quietly kind.

Appearance

Jinsung is a lean, unassuming man with shaggy dark hair, tired eyes and a smoker's slouch, usually in a plain suit he wears like an afterthought. Nothing about him announces what he is, one of the most feared martial artists alive, until he moves, at which point the room understands that the casual man in the doorway has been the most dangerous person in it the whole time. With his student he looks different: softer, almost grandfatherly, fussing over meals and manners like a relative rather than a FUG elder.

Personality

Jinsung is dry, tired and quietly kind, a legendary killer who behaves like a weary uncle. Centuries in FUG have not burned the decency out of him; they have made it private. He teaches Viole to fight and, in the same breath, teaches him to eat properly and live like a person, because Jinsung knows exactly what FUG intends to make of the boy and is sabotaging it in the only way available to him: by giving the weapon a home. His loyalty to his student puts him against his own organisation, and he accepts the price with a smoker's shrug.

Background & Story

Ha Jinsung is a High Ranker of the Ha Family and an elder of FUG, the criminal syndicate that opposes Jahad's empire from the Tower's shadows. FUG's hope is its slayer candidates, weapons being raised to kill the king, and Jinsung was given charge of the most promising of them: the Irregular boy FUG renamed Jue Viole Grace. Jinsung trained him in martial arts with a master's rigour and, unexpectedly, treated him like a grandson, feeding him, housing him and standing between him and FUG's colder plans. That affection puts Jinsung in an impossible position: the organisation's weapon is the person he most wants to protect from it.

Powers & Abilities

• Ha Family Martial Arts: Jinsung is a master of the Ha Family's brutal hand-to-hand style, including the Floral Butterfly Piercing Technique, the core of the fighting he teaches Viole.
• High Ranker Power: As a High Ranker, Jinsung stands among the Tower's strongest people; his shinsu control and physical power dwarf entire teams of Regulars.

Key Relationships

• Twenty-Fifth Bam: His student, the slayer candidate Viole, whom Jinsung trained, housed and came to love like family, against FUG's intentions for him.
• Karaka: His other student, a FUG slayer raised by Jinsung in the organisation's shadows, whose path and Viole's keep crossing.
• Hwaryun: FUG's red-haired guide, who manages Viole's movements for the organisation. She and Jinsung handle the slayer candidate from opposite ends of the same plan.
