Akaza

Akaza

From Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Quick Answer

Akaza is a supporting antagonist in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, Upper Rank Three of the Twelve Kizuki, a martial artist demon who respects strength above everything and offers worthy fighters eternity as demons. He fights bare-handed, guided by his compass-like sense for battle spirit. He is voiced by Akira Ishida in Japanese and Lucien Dodge in English.

About Akaza

Akaza is Upper Rank Three of the Twelve Kizuki, a martial artist demon who respects strength above everything and offers worthy fighters the chance to become demons. He despises the weak, refuses to eat women and fights bare-handed with destructive techniques guided by a compass-like sense for battle spirit. His clash with the Flame Hashira made him one of Tanjiro's most hated enemies.

Appearance

Akaza has the compact, powerful build of a lifelong martial artist, with short pink hair, yellow eyes crossed by cracked, glass-like patterns and blue-striped tattoos covering his whole body, markings that look like a criminal's brands, because that is what they once were. He wears a sleeveless purple-pink vest left open, white trousers cropped at the calf and beaded anklets, and he fights barefoot and bare-handed. When his technique activates, a glowing blue compass rose spreads beneath his feet, its needles pointing to every fighter in range. Even smiling, Akaza looks like what he is: a duellist permanently mid-bow before a fight to the death.

Personality

Akaza is a demon built around a single obsession: strength, pursued honestly. He loves fighting the strong, despises cowards and trickery, refuses to eat women, and genuinely invites worthy opponents to become demons so their growth need never stop. His courtesy is real, he praises enemies mid-battle and means it. So is his brutality: to Akaza, the weak have no right to the time they waste, and he kills them without a flicker of doubt. What makes him fascinating is the hole at his centre: he cannot remember being human at all, only that something precious was taken and that getting stronger feels like the only answer. His hatred of weakness is loudest because it is aimed, without his knowing, at himself.

Background & Story

As a human, Akaza was Hakuji, a boy who stole to buy medicine for his sick father, was branded a criminal for it, and lost his father to despair anyway. Taken in by a dojo master, Keizo, he found honest life and love with his daughter Koyuki, until a rival dojo poisoned them both while he was away. What Hakuji did to that dojo ended his humanity; Muzan found the broken young murderer and made him a demon. Over more than a century as Upper Rank Three, Akaza forgot every part of that story except the fighting. Aboard the Mugen Train's aftermath he meets the Flame Hashira, and makes his famous offer, setting up the clash Tanjiro will never forgive.

Powers & Abilities

  • Destructive Death: Akaza's Blood Demon Art shapes his martial arts into shockwave techniques, punches and kicks that blast through targets at range.
  • Compass Needle: A snowflake-like compass forms beneath him, sensing every opponent's battle spirit so precisely that he counters attacks almost before they launch.
  • Upper Rank regeneration: As Upper Rank Three, Akaza regenerates almost instantly and can keep fighting through wounds that would end lesser demons.
  • Supreme martial arts: A century of duelling the strongest has made his unarmed technique the equal of any Hashira's swordsmanship.

Key Relationships

  • Kyojuro Rengoku: The Flame Hashira Akaza most respects, his offer of demonhood and Rengoku's refusal define both men completely.
  • Tanjiro Kamado: The boy who witnessed Akaza's duel with Rengoku and carries the Corps' grudge against him personally.
  • Muzan Kibutsuji: The king who made Akaza a demon and whom Akaza serves with more loyalty than affection, driven by a need to be strong enough.
