Sanemi Shinazugawa

Sanemi Shinazugawa

From Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Quick Answer

Sanemi Shinazugawa is a supporting character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, the Wind Hashira, a scarred, aggressive swordsman whose rare marechi blood drives demons into a frenzy. His violent temper hides a man who fights harder than anyone to keep others alive. He is voiced by Tomokazu Seki in Japanese and Kaiji Tang in English.

About Sanemi Shinazugawa

Sanemi is the Wind Hashira, a scarred, aggressive swordsman who trusts no demon and argues with almost everyone, including his own younger brother Genya. His rare blood drives demons wild, and his Wind Breathing is as violent as his temper. Fierce as he seems, his anger comes from loss, and few Hashira fight harder to keep others alive.

Appearance

Sanemi looks like a fight that never ended: a lean, heavily muscled man covered in scars, with spiky white hair, wild purple eyes and a permanent snarl. He wears his Corps uniform open over his scarred chest, sleeves often torn away, and his green-tinted Nichirin blade is usually in his hand rather than its sheath, Sanemi does not really do 'at rest'. In battle he deliberately cuts himself, letting his marechi blood spill to intoxicate demons. Everything about him is provocation: the posture, the grin, the blood. Enemies and allies alike read him as a mad dog, which he has never once bothered to correct.

Personality

Sanemi is hostile, foul-mouthed and quick to violence, especially about demons, he stabs Nezuko's box at the Hashira meeting to prove a point and argues with nearly everyone, including the brother he claims to hate. It is an act with a purpose: Sanemi's whole family was slaughtered, his mother became a demon he had to kill, and he decided the only way to protect his last brother, Genya, was to drive him out of the Corps and out of danger. His love expresses itself as cruelty because he cannot risk it expressing itself as anything else. Strip the performance away and Sanemi is simple: a man who lost everything, determined that no one else will.

Background & Story

Sanemi was the eldest of seven children in a poor, violent home. One night his mother did not come home, until she did, as a demon, and slaughtered five of his siblings before Sanemi killed her with his own hands as the sun rose, an act his little brother Genya witnessed and called murder. Sanemi threw himself into demon hunting with no training and no Breathing, surviving on marechi blood and fury until the Corps took him in and he climbed to Wind Hashira. He refuses to acknowledge Genya, insisting he has no brother, the lie he tells to keep the last of his family safe from the life that destroyed the rest of it.

Powers & Abilities

  • Wind Breathing: A violent, whirlwind style of nine forms, Sanemi's swordplay is all offence, tearing into enemies like a typhoon.
  • Marechi blood: Sanemi's blood is the rarest and most intoxicating type for demons, its scent alone can intoxicate and disorient them, and he weaponises his own wounds.
  • Hashira-level endurance: His pain tolerance and will are extraordinary, letting him keep fighting through injuries that would stop other slayers.

Key Relationships

  • Tanjiro Kamado: The boy Sanemi tried to expel at the Hashira meeting for sheltering Nezuko, their clashes are the Corps' most explosive.
  • Nezuko Kamado: The demon Sanemi refuses to accept on principle, he tested her with his own blood, and she passed by turning away.
  • Gyomei Himejima: The one Hashira Sanemi deeply respects; the Stone Hashira's judgement is the closest thing to authority he accepts.
