Mitsuri Kanroji

Mitsuri Kanroji

From Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba

Quick Answer

Mitsuri Kanroji is a supporting character in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, the Love Hashira, a cheerful, big-hearted swordswoman with superhuman strength and a whip-like blade. She joined the Corps hoping to find a husband stronger than herself. She is voiced by Kana Hanazawa in Japanese and Kira Buckland in English.

About Mitsuri Kanroji

Mitsuri is the Love Hashira, a cheerful, big-hearted swordswoman with pink-and-green hair, a huge appetite and strength far beyond her gentle looks. She joined the Corps hoping to find someone stronger than herself to marry, and fights with a whip-like flexible blade and her own Love Breathing. She blushes easily, loves everyone warmly and protects the Swordsmith Village fiercely.

Appearance

Mitsuri is a curvy young woman with long, thick hair in three braids, coloured pink fading to green, a side effect, she explains, of eating too many sakura mochi. Her eyes are pale green, her cheeks flush easily, and her uniform is a notably modified version of the standard Corps outfit with a white haori. Her sword is like nothing else in the Corps: an extremely thin, flexible blade that folds and coils like a ribbon, carried in a sheath that bends with it. Everything about Mitsuri is soft colours and warmth, until the blade starts moving faster than eyes can follow.

Personality

Mitsuri is pure warmth: affectionate, excitable, easily flustered and incapable of hiding a single feeling. She falls a little in love with everyone admirable she meets, praises her comrades constantly, and eats with the appetite of five swordsmen. Under the blushes is real steel, she is a Hashira, with a Hashira's resolve, and her cheerfulness is a choice she made after years of being told she was too much: too strong, too hungry, too strange to marry. Mitsuri stopped shrinking herself. Her dream of finding a husband stronger than her sounds like a joke until you realise what it means: she wants to be loved as she actually is.

Background & Story

Mitsuri was born with impossible strength, as a toddler she could lift stones grown men could not, and muscle density eight times that of a normal human. As a young woman she tried to be marriageable: she dyed her pink-and-green hair black, ate less, acted frail. A fiancé still rejected her as strange, and Mitsuri finally asked why she should hide what the gods gave her. She joined the Demon Slayer Corps, where strength is prized instead of feared, trained under Flame Hashira Rengoku, and created her own Love Breathing from his Flame Breathing. At the Swordsmith Village, the girl who was 'too much' for marriage becomes exactly enough to hold back an Upper Rank demon.

Powers & Abilities

  • Love Breathing: Mitsuri's personal style, derived from Flame Breathing, acrobatic, whirling forms that exploit her flexibility and her ribbon-like sword.
  • Whip-like Nichirin sword: Her ultra-thin, flexible blade lashes and coils at extreme range and speed, cutting from angles no rigid sword could reach.
  • Superhuman strength and body: Born with muscle density eight times normal, Mitsuri is far stronger than she looks, with flexibility and durability to match.

Key Relationships

  • Kyojuro Rengoku: Her former master, Mitsuri trained under the Flame Hashira, and her Love Breathing grew from his Flame Breathing.
  • Tanjiro Kamado: A young slayer she adores like a little brother; his sincerity is exactly the kind of strength she respects.
  • Nezuko Kamado: The demon girl Mitsuri treats with open affection, unbothered by what she is.
  • Muichiro Tokito: Her fellow Hashira at the Swordsmith Village, where the two defend the village side by side.
