Zenitsu Agatsuma

About Zenitsu Agatsuma

Zenitsu is a nervous, loud Demon Slayer who cries, panics and begs to quit almost every mission. Yet when fear knocks him unconscious, his sleeping self fights with stunning speed and perfect Thunder Breathing form. He travelled with Tanjiro after the Final Selection, slowly finding real courage while awake, one frightening battle at a time, for his friends.

Appearance

Zenitsu is a slim teenager with bright yellow hair, dyed that colour, he insists, by a lightning strike, cut in a choppy bowl shape, and downcast golden-brown eyes that usually look close to tears. He wears the Demon Slayer uniform under a yellow-orange haori patterned with white triangles, and his Nichirin blade carries a lightning-streak pattern along its edge. His body language is a performance all by itself: trembling, clinging, wailing and flinching at every sound. Then, asleep, everything changes, his posture straightens, his face calms, and the coward becomes a swordsman too fast to follow.

Personality

Zenitsu is a coward and makes no secret of it: he screams, begs, proposes marriage to strangers and assumes every mission will kill him. He is also, underneath the panic, genuinely kind, fiercely loyal and possessed of the sharpest hearing in the Corps, he can hear a person's character in the sound of their heart, which is why he trusts Tanjiro completely. His self-esteem is buried under debt, rejection and failure, yet when someone he loves is in danger his body moves before his fear can stop it. Zenitsu's story is a boy learning that courage is not the absence of his terror, it is what he does while terrified.

Background & Story

Zenitsu was an orphan saddled with debt by a woman who swindled him, until the former Thunder Hashira Jigoro Kuwajima paid his debts and took him in as a student. Training under 'Gramps' alongside the gifted Kaigaku, Zenitsu was a hopeless case who hid in trees from practice, until lightning struck him mid-hiding, turning his hair yellow. He never mastered more than the first of Thunder Breathing's six forms, but he polished that one form to perfection. He survived Final Selection convinced it was a fluke, and fell in with Tanjiro and Nezuko on the road. The loudest coward in the Corps is slowly becoming, awake as well as asleep, the swordsman his grandfather always believed he could be.

Powers & Abilities

• Thunder Breathing, First Form: Thunderclap and Flash: The only form Zenitsu mastered, a single dashing strike at such speed that enemies are beheaded before they see him move.
• Sixfold and Eightfold: By chaining the First Form's dash again and again, Zenitsu multiplies its speed and changes direction mid-assault.
• Fighting asleep: When terror overwhelms him, Zenitsu faints, and his trained body fights on instinct with perfect form, free of hesitation.
• Superhuman hearing: Zenitsu can hear heartbeats, emotions and even thoughts in sound, letting him read people and detect demons no one else notices.

Key Relationships

• Tanjiro Kamado: His comrade and friend, whose honest heartbeat Zenitsu trusts more than anyone's, he would follow Tanjiro anywhere, loudly complaining.
• Nezuko Kamado: The girl Zenitsu adores on sight; he guards her box with his life, even while asleep.
• Inosuke Hashibira: His other comrade, the boar-headed brute whose fearlessness both terrifies and inspires him.
