About William Vangeance

William Vangeance is captain of the Golden Dawn, the kingdom's most honoured squad, and the man closest to becoming the next Wizard King. Polite, trusted and masked, he fights with world tree magic that grows vast roots and branches across the battlefield. He shares a deep, complicated bond with the elf Licht, and his divided loyalties sit at the story's centre.

Appearance

William is a slender man with light hair and gentle features, almost always hidden behind his distinctive mask, a blue and gold helm-like mask with a red gem, covering the upper half of his face. He wears the Golden Dawn's ornate robe with its fur trim like a young prince. His World Tree Magic is the most visually majestic in the kingdom: a colossal tree erupting from the earth, roots and branches reshaping whole battlefields. The scars beneath his mask, from a cursed childhood, are the reason it exists.

Personality

William thanks people. He thanks his squad, he trusts his rivals, he apologises when his own side wins too roughly. As captains go he's almost suspiciously gracious, right up until you remember the mask, and what's underneath it, and who else is living in his head. Patry. The elf whose grief and rage at humanity burn exactly as hot as William's love for the kingdom that raised him. Both of them mean it. That's the tragedy. When the moment came to choose, William couldn't, and he let his two worlds crash into each other with everyone he loved in the middle. He's spent the rest of the story trying to pay for that failure standing up, sword out, next to the knights he betrayed.

Background & Story

William was born the unwanted child of a noble house, scarred by a curse and raised in the Forsaken Realm until Julius Novachrono recognised his magic and raised him into the Magic Knights, giving a shamed boy a mask, a future and a captain's seat over the kingdom's best. Inside him, unrecognised for years, slept the reincarnated soul of the elf Patry. The two became friends in the dark of one mind, and when Patry's plan ripened, the elves' resurrection and revenge, William could not choose between his species and his saviour's kingdom. His failure detonated the elf crisis. Afterward, stripped of excuses, William faced his squad and his kingdom, offered his resignation and his life to the war effort, and fought to earn back the name Golden Dawn.

• World Tree Magic: William grows a colossal world tree that absorbs enemy magic, reshapes terrain and can drain the mana of whole armies through its roots.
• Mistilteinn Seed: Seeds that sprout into trees on contact with magic, feeding on it, turning an enemy's strongest spell into William's weapon.

• Julius Novachrono: His saviour and king, who raised a cursed outcast boy into a captain, the debt William's betrayal wounded deepest.
• Yami Sukehiro: His fellow captain and closest friend since their Grey Deer days; Yami's refusal to give up on him anchors his atonement.
• Yuno: His vice-captain in all but name and the squad member he trusts most, Yuno's faith in him survives even the truth.
