Julius Novachrono
From Black Clover
Julius Novachrono is a supporting character in Black Clover, the Wizard King of the Clover Kingdom, a Time Magic user whose obsession with new magic hides the most reform-minded ruler the kingdom has had. He is voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa in Japanese and Robert McCollum in English.
About Julius Novachrono
Julius is the Wizard King of the Clover Kingdom, the strongest mage in the land and a total magic nerd who sneaks out in disguise to watch new spells. His time magic can steal, store and rewind moments, yet he uses his power to reform a kingdom where birth does not decide worth. Asta and Yuno both dream of earning his title.
Appearance
Julius is a tall man with blond hair and purple eyes, a small star-shaped mark on his forehead, and the ornate white robe and crown-like mantle of the Wizard King. His grimoire is unique in the kingdom: it has no covers, its pages circling him in a ring when he casts. The grandeur keeps slipping, he sneaks out of the castle in disguise to watch street magic, geeking over strangers' spells with the delight of a child, and must be dragged back to his paperwork by his aides.
Personality
Julius has a problem no aide has ever managed to fix: the Wizard King keeps escaping. He slips out of the castle in disguise to watch street performers cast spells, and has to be dragged back to his paperwork like a truant. It's funny, and it's also the key to him. The man genuinely loves magic, all of it, from anybody, and he built his kingdom around that love. Results over birth. Merit over blood. It's how a shipwrecked foreign brat named Yami ended up a captain. In battle the geek vanishes and something gentle and absolute ends the fight before you've registered it starting. Apologising, usually. And under even that sits a second soul, with a centuries-old plan of its own, which the series only slowly peels back.
Background & Story
Julius rose through the Magic Knights as a captain of the Grey Deer, collecting talented outcasts, among them a shipwrecked foreigner named Yami and a masked boy named William, and reforming the order around merit as he climbed to Wizard King. From the throne he has spent years steering the kingdom toward his vision while indulging his habit of slipping away to watch magic in the streets, which is how he first noticed Asta's anti-magic. When the Eye of the Midnight Sun's plot came to its climax, Julius fought the enemy leader alone at the kingdom's heart, and the battle exposed the secret he has carried for centuries: his soul and grimoire are shared with Lucius Zogratis, the eldest of the devil-host siblings.
Powers & Abilities
- Time Magic: Julius steals, stores and spends time itself, accelerating, stopping and reversing it, aging enemies to dust or rewinding wounds away in an instant.
- Time Restraining Magic: Chronostasis: Spheres of frozen time that trap enemies mid-motion, his preferred way to end fights without killing.
- Coverless grimoire: His grimoire has no cover and pages beyond counting, a visible sign that his magic, and his life, do not follow the kingdom's rules.
Key Relationships
- Yami Sukehiro: His protégé and favourite success story, the foreigner Julius raised to captain, and the man who trusts him most.
- William Vangeance: Another of his rescued outcasts, raised to captain of the Golden Dawn; Julius's faith in him is tested by the war's revelations.
- Asta: The magicless boy whose anti-magic delights him, Julius backs Asta's rise as living proof of his merit-first kingdom.
