From Kuroko's Basketball

Quick Answer

Taiga Kagami is Seirin's power forward in Kuroko's Basketball, a tall, explosive athlete who learned the game on American street courts and returned to Japan hungry for real opponents. His jumping power grows until he can stand against the Generation of Miracles. He is voiced by Yuki Ono in Japanese and Zeno Robinson in English.

About Taiga Kagami

Taiga Kagami is Seirin's power forward, a tall, explosive athlete who learned basketball on American street courts and returned to Japan hungry for real opponents. His jumping power and instincts grow match by match until he can stand against the Generation of Miracles, and, in the Zone, beyond them. Fiery and honest, Kagami is the light to Kuroko's shadow: the finisher whose strength makes the phantom's passes matter.

Appearance

Kagami is a big, athletic 190 cm with two-toned hair, dark with red highlights, split eyebrows and intense red-brown eyes. He wears Seirin's number 10 jersey. His build is all power: broad shoulders, long arms and legs that seem to keep unfolding when he jumps. Off court he looks intimidating and is usually found eating, his appetite is legendary, but around teammates his expressions soften quickly. When he enters the Zone, the artwork sharpens around his eyes, as if his focus has become visible.

Personality

Kagami is fiery, honest and straightforward to a fault. He says what he thinks, challenges anyone stronger than him, and hates the idea of giving up or playing safe. Raised on American streetball, he plays with joy and aggression in equal measure, and he improves fastest when the opponent seems impossible. Beneath the temper is a team player growing in real time: he learns to trust Kuroko's passes, to defer when a teammate is hotter, and to carry Seirin without trying to win alone. His hunger is the team's fire, when Kagami refuses to lose, Seirin follows.

Background & Story

Kagami learned basketball in Los Angeles, where he was taught by coach Alexandra Garcia and formed a brotherly bond, and a rivalry, with Tatsuya Himuro. Returning to Japan for high school, he joined Seirin expecting easy dominance and was shocked by Kuroko's existence and by the level of the Generation of Miracles. After Kise's Kaijo beat Seirin in a practice match, Kagami committed to the goal Kuroko set: defeat every Miracle and become the best in Japan. Match by match his jumping power, his defence and his understanding of team play grow, until the boy who played alone in America becomes the light that a whole team, and one very determined shadow, plays around.

Powers & Abilities

  • Jumping Power: Kagami's vertical leap is his signature gift, he rises high enough to block taller players and dunk over centres, and it keeps growing as he trains his legs.
  • Meteor Jam: A dunk thrown down from the peak of his jump with full force, used when Kagami needs one unstoppable finish.
  • The Zone: In moments of total focus Kagami enters the Zone, where his speed, reactions and finishing rise to the level of the Generation of Miracles.
  • Animal Instinct: Kagami's court instincts sharpen into something almost feral, he senses plays and reacts before conscious thought, like the wild players of the Miracles.

Key Relationships

  • Tetsuya Kuroko: His shadow and partner, Kuroko chose Kagami as his light, and their trust is the core of Seirin's basketball.
  • Tatsuya Himuro: His American 'big brother' who taught him basketball; their broken bond is mended on court at the Winter Cup.
  • Daiki Aomine: The Miracle Kagami measures himself against, their duels are the series' purest contest of talent and will.
  • Junpei Hyuga: His captain, whose strictness Kagami respects and whose clutch shooting saves Seirin when Kagami is stopped.
  • Ryota Kise: The first Miracle he faced; their practice-match clash set Kagami's standard for what he had to become.
