Daiki Aomine

Daiki Aomine

From Kuroko's Basketball

Quick Answer

Daiki Aomine is Too Academy's ace in Kuroko's Basketball, the Generation of Miracles' strongest scorer, all impossible speed and formless shots. The first Miracle to break under his own talent, concluding that 'the only one who can beat me is me', he stopped practising until Kagami and Kuroko challenged him. He is voiced by Junichi Suwabe in Japanese and Benjamin Diskin in English.

About Daiki Aomine

Daiki Aomine is the ace of the Generation of Miracles, a scorer of impossible speed, formless shots and pure instinct, and the first Miracle to break under his own talent, concluding that 'the only one who can beat me is me'. Bored and alone at the top, he stopped practising, until Kagami and Kuroko challenged him. He is Kuroko's former light: raw genius, waiting to remember why he loved the game.

Appearance

Aomine is 192 cm, lean and powerful, with dark skin, navy-blue hair and sharp blue eyes that carry a bored, half-lidded look, until a real challenge wakes them up. He wears Too Academy's number 5 jersey. His play has no textbook shape: shots launched mid-fall, behind the backboard, off-balance from impossible angles, all delivered at a speed that makes set defences pointless. Off court he slouches through life, napping on rooftops, reading magazines, skipping practice, the picture of a genius who has run out of reasons to try.

Personality

Aomine is lazy, blunt and lonely at the top. He loved basketball more than anyone at Teiko, and that is precisely what broke him: as his talent exploded past every opponent, the game stopped answering back, and winning became empty. His famous line, the only one who can beat me is me, is arrogance and despair in the same breath. He quit practising, grew cold to teammates, and waited, without admitting it, for someone to make him play seriously again. When that challenge finally comes from Kuroko and Kagami, the joy Aomine buried starts fighting its way back, and he becomes dangerous in a completely new way.

Background & Story

At Teiko, Aomine was the Miracles' ace and Kuroko's partner, his 'light', and their combination was unstoppable. But Aomine's growth outpaced everyone; by his third year no opponent could test him, and he stopped coming to practice, a habit he carried to Too Academy. Seirin's first meeting with him is a lesson in despair: Aomine, playing at half effort, is beyond anything Kagami can reach. Their Winter Cup rematch is the heart of the series, Kuroko's new basketball and Kagami's Zone finally give Aomine the fight he has been starving for, and defeat, when it comes, returns something to him that winning never could: a reason to play.

Powers & Abilities

  • Formless Shots: Aomine can score from any posture and angle, falling away, under the rim, behind the backboard, because his shot has no fixed form to read or block.
  • Unmatched Speed and Agility: His acceleration and change of direction are the fastest in the series; set defences simply cannot stay in front of him.
  • The Zone: Aomine was the first Miracle shown entering the Zone at will, pushing his speed and finishing beyond even his normal impossible level.
  • Streetball Handles: Raised on playground basketball, his dribbling is loose, creative and impossible to scheme against.

Key Relationships

  • Tetsuya Kuroko: His former light at Teiko, the partner he left behind, and the person whose basketball finally reaches him again.
  • Satsuki Momoi: His childhood friend, who followed him to Too and watches over him with exasperated devotion.
  • Taiga Kagami: The rival who finally gave him a real game, Aomine recognises Kagami as the opponent he had been waiting for.
  • Ryota Kise: The Miracle who has chased him since Teiko one-on-ones; Aomine respects Kise's hunger more than he admits.
