Monkey D. Luffy

About Monkey D. Luffy

Luffy is the cheerful captain of the Straw Hat Pirates and the hero of One Piece. After eating a Devil Fruit, his body gained rubber-like powers, which he uses in wild and creative ways in battle. His big dream is to find the legendary One Piece treasure and become the Pirate King, and he never gives up on his friends along the way.

Appearance

Luffy is a lean, wiry young man with messy black hair, round eyes and a small scar under his left eye, matched by the famous X-shaped scar across his chest. He almost always wears his treasured straw hat, a red vest, shorts and sandals, and grins at nearly everything. When he fights seriously, steam pours off his skin in Gear 2, his limbs swell huge in Gear 3 and 4, and in Gear 5 his hair and clothes turn white and his body moves like a cartoon come to life.

Personality

Luffy is cheerful, fearless and famously simple: he decides with his gut, eats enormous amounts of meat, and treats friendship as the most serious promise in the world. He hates cruelty and cannot walk past someone being bullied, but he has no interest in ruling anyone. For Luffy, the Pirate King is simply the freest person on the sea. His judgement of people is instinctive and usually right, and his crew trusts his reckless calls because, when it matters, Luffy never runs from a fight that protects his friends.

Background & Story

Monkey D. Luffy grew up in Foosha Village in the East Blue, where the pirate captain Shanks became his hero. When bandits sneered at Shanks and Luffy ate a Devil Fruit from the pirates' chest by accident, his body turned to rubber for life, and Shanks lost an arm saving him from a sea monster, leaving Luffy his straw hat and a promise to return it one day. Raised in the mountains by the bandit Dadan alongside his sworn brothers Ace and Sabo, Luffy set sail alone at seventeen. Gathering his crew island by island, a swordsman, a navigator, a sniper, a cook, a doctor, an archaeologist, a shipwright, a musician and a helmsman, he declared war on the World Government itself to save one friend, and his Straw Hat Pirates became one of the most wanted crews on the sea.

Powers & Abilities

• Gum-Gum Fruit powers: Luffy's body has the properties of rubber, he stretches, inflates and bounces back from blows that would crush a normal person, and he is immune to bullets and lightning.
• Gear 2: By pumping his blood faster, Luffy gains explosive speed and power, with steam rising from his overheating body.
• Gear 3: Luffy blows air into his bones to inflate a limb to giant size, landing slow but devastating punches.
• Gear 4: Boundman and Snakeman: Coating his inflated body in Armament Haki, Luffy becomes a bouncing powerhouse, or, as Snakeman, a slimmer form whose punches change direction mid-flight to chase dodging enemies.
• Gear 5: Luffy's awakened form: his hair and clothes turn white, his heartbeat drums like music, and he fights with cartoon-like freedom, bending his body, and even the ground, like rubber.
• Observation, Armament and Conqueror's Haki: Luffy can sense attacks and emotions, harden his body into armour, and release the rare Conqueror's Haki that overwhelms weaker wills, even coating his strikes with it.

Key Relationships

• Roronoa Zoro: His first crewmate and swordsman, the man Luffy trusts to stand beside him against anything, and his unofficial right hand.
• Nami: His navigator, who steers the crew through impossible seas; Luffy once placed his precious straw hat on her head and promised to free her village.
• Shanks: The pirate who inspired him as a boy and gave him the straw hat, with a promise to return it when Luffy becomes a great pirate.
• Portgas D. Ace: His sworn older brother, raised with him in the mountains; Ace's safety once drove Luffy to invade the world's most secure prisons and war.
• Monkey D. Garp: His grandfather, a Marine hero who wanted Luffy to become a Marine and trained him with terrifying 'fists of love' instead.
