About Nami

Nami is the Straw Hat Pirates' navigator and one of the first friends Luffy made on his journey. She can read the weather like nobody else and dreams of drawing a complete map of the whole world. She loves treasure and oranges, keeps the crew's money in check, and fights with a staff that controls the weather itself.

Appearance

Nami is a slim young woman with long orange hair and brown eyes, and a tattoo on her left shoulder, a pinwheel and tangerine design that replaced a darker mark from her past. She dresses practically for the climate of each island, usually in a top, skirt or shorts and heels, and she is rarely far from her log pose compasses and chart tools. Her weather staff, the Clima-Tact, is carried in sections at her waist.

Personality

Nami is sharp, bossy and proudly obsessed with money and treasure, she can smell a scam and run one better. Beneath the greed sits the crew's most practical mind: she is often the only person thinking about supplies, weather and escape routes while the boys charge in. She is terrified of monsters yet brave exactly when her friends need her, and her temper keeps even Luffy and Zoro in line. Her soft spot is children, and her loyalty, once given, is total.

Background & Story

Nami was a war orphan taken in on the battlefield by the Marine Bellemere, who raised her with her adoptive sister Nojiko in Cocoyasi Village, growing tangerines. Nami's gift for drawing charts showed early, and so did the tragedy: the fish-man pirate Arlong occupied the village, killed Bellemere, and forced the young girl to draw charts for his crew for eight years while she secretly saved money to buy her village's freedom. When Arlong betrayed the deal, Nami finally asked for help, and Luffy destroyed Arlong Park and freed her. She joined the Straw Hats for real, as their navigator, chasing a map of the whole world.

Powers & Abilities

• Clima-Tact and Sorcery Clima-Tact: Nami's staff creates bubbles of heat, cold and electricity that she combines into mirages, lightning strikes and storms; upgraded versions store real weather from the sky island of Weatheria.
• Zeus: A living thundercloud homie who rides inside Nami's staff and can unleash enormous lightning bolts, and who adores the weather eggs she feeds him.
• Expert navigation: Nami senses coming storms in her body and reads the Grand Line's impossible weather better than any instrument, steering the crew through seas that sink most ships.

• Monkey D. Luffy: Her captain, who freed her village and entrusted her with his straw hat, she repays him by steering his ship and scolding him daily.
• Bellemere: The Marine who adopted and raised her; Bellemere's courage and her tangerine grove remain the heart of everything Nami does.
• Nojiko: Her adoptive older sister, who stayed in Cocoyasi Village and keeps the tangerine grove; the two share the pinwheel-and-tangerine bond.
• Usopp: The crew's inventor, who built her Clima-Tact and upgrades it; they are the crew's two most easily frightened, and most practical, members.
• Sanji: The cook, whose hopeless devotion to her she shamelessly exploits for errands, though she trusts him completely in a crisis.
