Sanji

About Sanji

Sanji is the Straw Hat Pirates' cook, a master chef who trained at the floating restaurant Baratie. He dreams of finding the All Blue, the legendary sea where fish from every ocean gather. He refuses to use his hands in a fight, saving them for cooking, and battles instead with devastating kicks. He is hopelessly devoted to women and fiercely loyal to his crew.

Appearance

Sanji is a tall, lean young man with blond hair swept over one side of his face, hiding one eye, and distinctive swirled eyebrows, the right one curling the opposite way to the left. He is almost never out of a black suit and tie, usually with a cigarette in hand, and he moves with a dancer's grace that turns lethal when he kicks. His legs can glow red-hot in battle, and after his body's hidden changes awaken, his speed can turn him invisible.

Personality

Sanji is a gentleman to the point of comedy, chivalrous, flirtatious and incapable of hitting a woman, even an enemy. With men, and especially Zoro, he is all insults. At his core he is the crew's kindest feeder: Sanji cannot refuse a hungry person food, friend or enemy, a lesson starvation burned into him as a child. He is also quietly the crew's strategist, often slipping away mid-battle to close a gate, sabotage a ship or appear exactly where Luffy needs him most.

Background & Story

Sanji was born into the Vinsmoke family, rulers of the Germa Kingdom, but as a gentle boy who fed rats and dreamed of cooking, he was bullied by his brothers and disowned by his father. He fled and became a young cook aboard a cruise ship, which was wrecked by the pirate Zeff; the two starved together on a bare rock for months, and Zeff gave the boy his own share of food and lost his leg. Together they founded the floating restaurant Baratie, where Sanji cooked until pirates attacked and Luffy arrived. Sanji joined the Straw Hats to find the All Blue, and to repay the old man who saved him.

Powers & Abilities

• Black Leg Style: Sanji's kick-only fighting style, taught by Zeff: devastating kicks that can shatter stone, deflect giant creatures and juggle enemies mid-air.
• Diable Jambe and Ifrit Jambe: By spinning at speed, Sanji heats his leg until it glows red-hot; in its stronger Ifrit form, blue-white flames and his hardened body let him strike with explosive, lightning-fast kicks.
• Sky Walk: Sanji kicks the air itself fast enough to run through the sky, and moves underwater at fish-man speed with Blue Walk.
• Raid Suit (retired): A Germa suit that granted flight, boosters and invisibility, Sanji used it briefly, then destroyed it, choosing to trust his own strength and the body it awakened instead.

Key Relationships

• Monkey D. Luffy: His captain, Sanji once left the crew to protect them and Zeff, and Luffy starved himself outside his door until Sanji came back.
• Zeff: The pirate-turned-chef who saved his life, sacrificed his leg and taught him cooking and kicking; Sanji calls him a 'crappy old man' and owes him everything.
• Roronoa Zoro: His shipboard rival, the two trade insults constantly and compete at everything, yet trust each other completely in battle.
• Nami: The navigator he adores hopelessly; his devotion is a running joke, but his respect for her orders at sea is real.
• Pudding: The woman placed in an arranged marriage with him, whose own double life mirrored his, her final act toward Sanji is one of the series' quietest kindnesses.
