Franky

About Franky

Franky is the Straw Hat Pirates' shipwright, the cyborg craftsman who built the crew's ship, the Thousand Sunny. Powered by cola and packed with built-in weapons, his body is a walking workshop of his own inventions. Loud, proud and quick to strike a pose, Franky dreams of sailing his ship to the end of the Grand Line and proving her the finest vessel in the world.

Appearance

Franky is a huge, broad-shouldered man standing well over two metres tall, with sky-blue hair he styles into wild shapes, a metal nose and a jaw like a cinder block. His forearms are enormous, with star tattoos and hidden weapon compartments; his legs and chest carry more machinery, and he usually wears a Hawaiian shirt and speedos without a trace of shame. His back is his one unmodified part, he could not reach it himself when he rebuilt his body.

Personality

Franky is loud, emotional and proud to the point of theatre: he strikes poses, shouts 'SUPER!', and cries openly at sad stories, moving speeches and good ships. He is also a craftsman of genius and a big brother to everyone younger, his loyalty to his found family, the Franky Family of Water 7, matched his loyalty to the Straw Hats instantly. Franky never apologises for being himself, and his confidence is infectious: if Franky says the Sunny can do it, the crew believes him.

Background & Story

Franky was born in the South Blue and abandoned by pirate parents at Water 7, where the legendary shipwright Tom took him in alongside Iceburg. Franky built warships for fun, until his creations were used to frame Tom, who was taken away to execution. Blaming himself, Franky threw himself in front of the sea train and rebuilt his shattered body with scrap iron into a cyborg. For years he ran Water 7's underworld demolition crew. When the Straw Hats fought the government at Enies Lobby, Franky burned the blueprints of an ancient weapon rather than let them fall into the wrong hands, then built the crew a dream ship from the strongest timber in the world, and sailed with her himself.

Powers & Abilities

• Cyborg body: Franky's front is steel: built-in cannons, extendable arms, a flamethrower breath and compartments everywhere, all cola-powered, and his mood changes with the fuel.
• General Franky: A giant combining robot built from the Sunny's docked vehicles, Franky's dream machine, which he pilots with total, childish joy.
• Master shipwright: Trained by Tom and keeper of dangerous knowledge, Franky can build or repair almost anything, from dream ships to bridges built mid-battle in minutes.
• Radical Beam: A laser fired from his palms, learned from studying Dr. Vegapunk's research during two years in the scientist's homeland.

Key Relationships

• Monkey D. Luffy: His captain, Franky joined after building Luffy's dream ship, and treats the Sunny and her crew as one family.
• Tom: The fish-man shipwright who raised him and taught him that a man must be proud of the ships he builds; Tom's fate drives Franky's life.
• Iceburg: His fellow apprentice under Tom, now mayor of Water 7, the brothers quarrelled for years before reconciling over Tom's memory.
• Nico Robin: The crewmate he protected at Enies Lobby, whose trust he earned by burning the ancient weapon's blueprints, the two form the crew's calm, adult core.
• Usopp: His workshop partner, who helped repair the Going Merry and shares his love of building absurd machines.
