Komugi
From Hunter x Hunter
Komugi is a supporting character in Hunter x Hunter, the blind world champion of Gungi, the board game she has never lost, whose matches against the Chimera Ant King change him more than any battle could. She is voiced by Aya Endo in Japanese.
About Komugi
Komugi is a blind young woman from East Gorteau and the world champion of Gungi, the board game she has never lost. Frail, nervous and painfully polite, she becomes unbeatable the moment a game begins. Summoned to play against Meruem, she treats the terrifying king with simple honesty and respect. Her quiet courage and genius slowly change him in ways no fighter ever could manage to do.
Appearance
Komugi is a small, frail young woman with pale skin, messy white hair worn loose, and eyes that are usually closed or half-lidded because she is blind. She dresses in simple, worn clothes from her poor village background and moves hesitantly, often sniffling with a runny nose and apologising for existing. Seated at a Gungi board the transformation is total: her posture straightens, her hands move with total certainty, and her face settles into serene concentration.
Personality
Komugi is painfully polite, self-effacing and convinced she is garbage at everything except one thing, a belief her impoverished family, who depend on her prize money, never had reason to correct. She has staked her life on Gungi literally: she plays under a vow to kill herself if she ever loses, because a Komugi who cannot win is worthless to everyone, including herself. Yet she is no coward: she faces the terrifying King without flinching, speaks to him honestly, and treats him as an opponent and a person rather than a monster, which no one else in his life has ever done.
Background & Story
Komugi was born blind into a poor family in East Gorteau, and discovered Gungi, a complex board game native to her country, as a child. She rose undefeated to world champion, becoming her family's breadwinner while remaining convinced of her own worthlessness outside the board. When the Chimera Ant King seizes her country and challenges its champions, Komugi is summoned to the palace, unaware her opponent is not human. Match after match she defeats the strongest being alive, awakening her own Nen through sheer mastery, and the King keeps her playing, and keeps changing. Their games become the emotional centre of the Chimera Ant war: two beings the world valued only for their use, recognising each other across the board.

- Unconscious Nen Awakening: Komugi's total mastery awakens Nen in her without training, sharpening her game further, an example of genius itself becoming a supernatural power.
Key Relationships
- Meruem: The King she plays and defeats at Gungi, treating him with an honesty and respect that slowly teach him what humanity means.
