Illumi Zoldyck

About Illumi Zoldyck

Illumi Zoldyck is Killua's eldest brother and a master assassin of the Zoldyck family. Emotionless and controlling, he believes Killua belongs at home as an assassin and uses Nen needles to manipulate people, memories and even his own face. His calm voice and blank stare make him deeply unsettling. To Illumi, family duty matters far more than freedom, feelings or the wishes of anyone else alive.

Appearance

Illumi is a tall, slender man at 185 cm, with very long straight black hair, huge dark eyes that are almost entirely pupil, and a pale, expressionless face that rarely changes. He dresses simply, often in green-toned clothes with the pins and needles of his ability visible at his chest. In disguise as Gittarackur during the Hunter Exam he is unrecognisable, a jittering figure with a distorted face held together by his own pins. His stillness and blank stare make him one of the most quietly frightening people in the story.

Personality

Illumi is calm, emotionless and utterly devoted to the Zoldyck family's logic: assassins do not need friends, and Killua's attachment to Gon is a defect to be corrected. He speaks in the flat tone of someone stating weather, even while threatening children, and his love for his family is real but expressed entirely as control. He manipulated Killua from childhood, including planting a needle in his brother's brain to guarantee obedience. Illumi is not sadistic for pleasure like Hisoka, he is something colder, a man who cannot conceive that control and love are different things.

Background & Story

Illumi is the eldest of the five Zoldyck children, raised on Kukuroo Mountain as a perfect assassin and trusted with the family's most delicate work. Concerned that Killua, the heir, was going astray, Illumi entered the Hunter Exam in disguise, partly for a licence the family business needed, partly to watch his brother, and confronted Killua there, breaking his confidence and sending him home. He remains the family's long arm throughout the story: hunting Killua when he defies the family, guarding the rules around their dangerous youngest sibling, and pursuing his own quiet ambition to control that sibling's wish-granting power for the family.

Powers & Abilities

• Needle Manipulation: Illumi's Nen needles, inserted into targets, let him control bodies like puppets, alter faces (including his own), erase memories and implant commands.
• Needle in Killua's Brain: Illumi planted a needle in his brother's head that forces Killua to flee from any opponent he is not certain he can beat, capping his growth for years.
• Master Assassin: As the Zoldyck family's eldest active assassin, Illumi has superhuman strength, stealth and killing skill on par with Hisoka's assessment of elite fighters.

Key Relationships

• Killua Zoldyck: His younger brother and the family heir, whom Illumi loves as a possession and controls through fear and a planted needle.
• Hisoka Morow: His associate and nearest thing to a friend, a professional alliance between two killers who understand each other perfectly.
• Gon Freecss: The friend Illumi considers a threat to Killua's future as an assassin, and therefore a person to remove if necessary.
