Izuku Midoriya

About Izuku Midoriya

Izuku, nicknamed Deku, was born without a Quirk in a world where almost everyone has one, and still dreamed of becoming a hero. His heart and courage earn him the trust of his idol All Might, who passes him the legendary power One For All. A kind, analytical fanboy who fills notebooks with hero research, Izuku has to master a power strong enough to break his own body, one step at a time.

Appearance

Izuku has messy dark green hair, green eyes and four freckles in a diamond pattern on each cheek. He is average height and was lightly built at first, but months of gruelling training for One For All give him a lean, muscular frame covered in scars, especially on his hands and arms from the times his own power broke his bones. His hero costume is green with a hood shaped with two tall points, a mouth guard, red belt and boots, and reinforced gloves and braces added as he learns to protect his body.

Personality

Izuku is kind, earnest and almost compulsive about helping people, he moves to save others before he has even decided to. He is also a devoted hero fanboy who fills notebooks with careful analysis of every Quirk he sees, and that habit makes him a clever, adaptable fighter who studies opponents mid-battle. Years of being bullied left him timid and quick to cry, but never resentful; his courage is not fearlessness, it is acting while terrified. His biggest flaw is his readiness to destroy his own body for someone else.

Background & Story

Izuku was born in a world where about eighty percent of people have a superpower, a Quirk, and he was part of the powerless minority. Diagnosed Quirkless at four, he refused to give up his dream of becoming a hero like his idol All Might, even as his childhood friend Bakugo turned on him for it. At fourteen, Izuku rushed in to save Bakugo from a villain when no hero would act, and All Might, who had witnessed it, chose him as a successor. All Might passed him One For All, a Quirk that stockpiles power and is handed down from holder to holder. After ten months of punishing training just to survive receiving it, Izuku entered U.A. High's Class 1-A, where he must master a power that shatters his bones whenever he uses too much of it.

Powers & Abilities

• One For All: A transferable Quirk passed down through nine holders that stockpiles raw power, granting Izuku superhuman strength, speed and durability far beyond a normal body.
• Full Cowling: Izuku spreads a controlled percentage of One For All evenly through his whole body instead of one limb, gaining balanced speed and strength without breaking his bones.
• Detroit Smash: A full-power punch modelled on All Might's own smashes, releasing a blast of wind pressure strong enough to change the weather at its peak.
• Shoot Style: A fighting style Izuku develops to protect his damaged arms, channelling One For All mainly into powerful kicks with iron-soled boots.
• Blackwhip: One of the extra Quirks stored inside One For All, producing dark tendrils of energy Izuku can use to grab, bind and swing from objects and enemies.

Key Relationships

• All Might: His idol, mentor and predecessor as holder of One For All; the man whose trust Izuku is determined to prove worthy of.
• Katsuki Bakugo: His childhood friend turned bully and rival, whose complicated history with Izuku drives both boys to grow.
• Ochaco Uraraka: His first friend at U.A., who turned his insulting nickname Deku into a name meaning 'you can do it'.
• Shoto Todoroki: A classmate Izuku helps free himself from his father's shadow, becoming a close friend and rival.
• Shota Aizawa: His homeroom teacher, whose tough, watchful guidance pushes Izuku to control his power instead of breaking himself with it.
