Edward Newgate

Edward Newgate

From One Piece

Quick Answer

Newgate, Whitebeard, was the captain of the Whitebeard Pirates and a supporting character in One Piece: the man closest to the One Piece after Roger's death. His Tremor-Tremor Fruit could crack the air and shake islands apart. He is voiced by Ryūzaburō Ōtomo in Japanese (originally Kinryū Arimoto) and R. Bruce Elliott in English.

About Edward Newgate

Newgate, known to the world as Whitebeard, was the captain of the Whitebeard Pirates and the man who stood closest to the One Piece after Roger's death. His Devil Fruit could crack the air itself and shake entire islands apart. Unlike other pirate captains, Whitebeard wanted no treasure: his crew was his treasure, and hundreds of pirates proudly called the old man their father.

Appearance

Whitebeard was a giant of a man, over six and a half metres tall, with a huge muscular chest covered in scars, a long white moustache shaped like a crescent moon, his famous 'white beard', and a captain's coat over his bare torso. He fought with a massive polearm, Murakumogiri, and spent his last years hooked to medical machines and sake barrels alike, nurses fussing around a man who could split the sea.

Personality

Whitebeard wanted no treasure and no crown: the loneliest orphan of the sea built a family instead, calling every crewmate 'son' and meaning it. His code was simple, harm one of his children and the whole sea learns why emperors fear him. He was proud, generous and utterly without fear, a man whose idea of wealth was a deck full of sons and a barrel of good drink. Even dying, Whitebeard thought of his crew first, and spent his last breath on the whole world's future.

Background & Story

Edward Newgate grew up an orphan on the island of Sphinx, too poor to protect his home, and went to sea not for gold but for a family. Rising through the Rocks Pirates' era into legend, he became Whitebeard, Roger's great rival and friend, and the only man who could have reached the One Piece and chose not to ask its secret. For decades his flag protected islands like Fish-Man Island by reputation alone. When the Marines captured his commander Ace and scheduled his execution, the old Emperor, dying, on machines, sailed to Marineford with his whole fleet, declaring war on the world to bring his son home.

Powers & Abilities

  • Tremor-Tremor Fruit: Whitebeard's fruit creates earthquakes in air, land and sea, he could crack the atmosphere itself, raise tsunamis and tilt an island with one punch.
  • Murakumogiri: One of the twelve Supreme Grade blades, a giant polearm Whitebeard wielded with his quakes and Haki, or planted in the deck to fight barehanded.
  • Conqueror's Haki: Whitebeard clashed evenly with Roger and Shanks using all three Haki, splitting the sky itself in their duels.

Key Relationships

  • Portgas D. Ace: His second division commander and beloved son, Whitebeard went to war with the world to save him.
  • Marco: His first division commander and right hand, the phoenix who led the crew after Whitebeard's fall.
  • Gol D. Roger: His greatest rival and drinking friend; Roger offered him the secret of the One Piece, and Whitebeard, wanting only family, declined.
  • Monkey D. Luffy: Ace's little brother, whom Whitebeard recognised at Marineford and ordered his whole crew to protect.
  • Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard): The crewmate who murdered a fellow son and betrayed the family, the one act Whitebeard could never forgive.
