Dracule Mihawk

From One Piece

Quick Answer

Dracule Mihawk is a major supporting character in One Piece, the world's strongest swordsman and the end goal of Roronoa Zoro's dream. A former Warlord of the Sea, he defeated Zoro at Baratie, then later trained him for two years. He is voiced by Hirohiko Kakegawa in Japanese and John Gremillion in English.

About Dracule Mihawk

Dracule Mihawk holds the title every swordsman in One Piece is chasing: the strongest swordsman in the world. He sails alone in a coffin-shaped boat, answers to nobody, and once held a seat among the Seven Warlords of the Sea. For Roronoa Zoro, Mihawk is not just an opponent. He is the finish line, the man Zoro has sworn his whole life to surpass.

Appearance

Mihawk is a tall, lean man with short black hair slicked back, a short beard and moustache, and striking yellow eyes with a hawk-like sharpness that give him his Hawk-Eye name. He dresses like a duellist from an older century: an ornate black and red coat over a patterned shirt, a wide-brimmed hat with a feather, and a small cross-shaped pendant at his neck that is secretly a tiny blade. His real sword, the black blade Yoru, rides on his back, almost as tall as he is, with a curved blade and a cross-shaped guard. Even standing still, he looks like a man mid-duel.

Personality

Mihawk is quiet, serious and almost impossible to impress, which is why the rare things that do impress him matter so much. He has no crew, no flag of his own and no interest in ruling anything. He simply wants a worthy opponent, and the top of the sword world has left him bored. So when a stubborn young swordsman at a sea restaurant demanded a duel and then refused to turn his back on a finishing blow, Mihawk recognised something. He spared Zoro, told him to grow stronger, and waited. His honour is old-fashioned and absolute. He keeps his word, he respects courage wherever he finds it, and he treats even a training arrangement with an enemy as a bond.

Background & Story

Very little of Mihawk's early life is shown, and the mystery suits him. He was already famous before the Pirate King's execution era ended, known as the Marine Hunter, and he dueled regularly with Shanks back when Shanks still had both arms, clashes the whole world heard about. By the time the story begins he sits unchallenged as the world's strongest swordsman, a Warlord of the Sea who mostly ignores the government's summons. He appears at the Baratie restaurant chasing a pirate fleet he had destroyed out of boredom, and there Zoro challenges him. Mihawk beats him with the tiny knife from his pendant, then, moved by Zoro's resolve, finishes the lesson with Yoru and leaves him a promise to keep the title warm. At Marineford he fights on the government's side and tests Luffy and the Whitebeard forces with casual, terrifying slashes. Then comes the twist nobody saw coming: Zoro, separated from his crew, kneels and begs Mihawk to train him. Mihawk laughs, agrees, and spends two years turning his future challenger into a swordsman worthy of the duel they both want. After the Warlord system is abolished, he throws in with Crocodile and Buggy in the Cross Guild, mostly because it gets the Marines off his island.

Powers & Abilities

  • Yoru, the black blade: Mihawk's great sword, one of the finest blades in the world and permanently black, a mark of a blade that has reached the highest grade through battle. Its slashes can cut ships and icebergs in half from a distance.
  • The world's strongest slash: Mihawk's flying slash attacks travel like green waves of force, thrown from Yoru with a flick of effort. At Marineford one swing split a frozen tsunami wall raised by an admiral's ice.
  • Kogatana, the pendant knife: The small cross-shaped dagger hidden in his necklace. Mihawk used it to defeat Zoro at Baratie without drawing Yoru, a humiliation and a lesson in one gesture. He says he uses it when an opponent is not worth the big blade, like hunting a rabbit with a cannon.
  • Haki mastery: Mihawk is a master of Haki, with the piercing perception his hawk eyes are famous for and Armament Haki strong enough to keep a blade black. He is the one who taught Zoro Haki properly during their two years of training.

Key Relationships

  • Roronoa Zoro: His future opponent and, for two years, his student. Mihawk crushed Zoro at Baratie, spared him for his courage, trained him at his own request, and now waits for the day Zoro comes to take his title.
  • Shanks: His old duelling partner. Before Shanks lost his arm, the two fought regularly in duels the world still talks about, and Mihawk lost interest in the rivalry once Shanks came back with one arm.
  • Monkey D. Luffy: An opponent Mihawk tested at Marineford, where his slashes chased Luffy across the battlefield. Mihawk seemed genuinely curious whether fate would let the boy survive him, and it did.
  • Boa Hancock: A fellow Warlord of the Sea. The two served in the same government-backed group and fought on the same side at Marineford, though Mihawk's loyalty to the system was always thinner than hers.

Quick Answers

Who voices Dracule Mihawk?

Mihawk is voiced by Hirohiko Kakegawa in the Japanese version and by John Gremillion in the English dub. Takeshi Aono voiced Mihawk originally, up to episode 460, before Kakegawa took over the role.

Why did Mihawk train Zoro?

After the Straw Hats were scattered, Zoro landed on Mihawk's island and did the unthinkable: he bowed his head to the man he had sworn to beat and asked to be trained, for his captain's sake. Mihawk found the sacrifice of pride so remarkable that he agreed, and trained him for two years.

What is Mihawk's sword called?

His sword is Yoru, a huge curved black blade he carries on his back. It ranks among the very finest swords in the world, and its permanent black colour marks it as a blade of the highest grade.

Did Mihawk beat Shanks?

The series never gives their duels a result. Mihawk and Shanks fought often in the past and were treated as equals, and their clashes were famous worldwide. After Shanks lost his arm saving Luffy, Mihawk refused to duel him again, saying he would not fight a one-armed man.
