From Fire Force
Arthur Boyle is Company 8's swordsman in Fire Force, a third-generation pyrokinetic who fights with the plasma blade Excalibur and lives entirely inside his own knightly fantasy. He is Shinra's rival and closest partner. He is voiced by Yusuke Kobayashi in Japanese and Eric Vale in English.
About Arthur Boyle
Arthur Boyle is Company 8's swordsman, a third-generation pyrokinetic who channels flame through his plasma blade Excalibur, and who lives entirely inside a knightly fantasy of his own making, addressing his captain as king and his missions as quests. His power rises and falls with his delusions. Beneath the comedy is Shinra's true rival: a boy abandoned as a child, who survived loneliness by becoming a story.
Appearance
Arthur is a lean teenager of 174 cm with blond hair worn in a loose ponytail and sleepy, self-satisfied blue eyes. He wears Company 8's uniform with a knight's imagined grandeur, and his signature weapon is a bladeless hilt from which he projects a blade of plasma. He often stands in dramatic poses nobody requested, chin high, addressing the world as if it were a royal court.
Personality
Arthur is a delusional, big-hearted idiot of the highest order. He believes, completely, that he is a knight king, addresses Obi as his king and missions as quests, and his power literally rises and falls with how deeply he believes his own legend. He is also brave, loyal and incapable of cruelty: the fantasy is a child's armour, built by a boy who was left alone and decided to become a story instead of a victim. His rivalry with Shinra is real, constant and affectionate.
Background & Story
Arthur was abandoned as a child: his parents left him behind when their restaurant failed, telling the little boy they were going on a quest to save the world and would return for him. Arthur chose to believe them, building an entire knightly identity on the story rather than accept he had been discarded. He trained at the Fire Force academy, where his brawling rivalry with Shinra began, and joined Company 8 shortly after him. Beneath the comedy, Arthur's arc is about what the fantasy costs and what it protects: a swordsman whose strength is his delusion is also a boy still waiting at the window.
Powers & Abilities
- Excalibur (Plasma Blade): Arthur channels his flame through a bladeless hilt to form a sword of superheated plasma that can cut through almost anything.
- Knight King's Delusion: Arthur's power literally grows stronger the deeper he believes in his knight fantasy, his delusion is a genuine combat resource, and breaking it weakens his blade.
Key Relationships
- Shinra Kusakabe: His eternal rival, 'devil' to Arthur's 'knight', and the partner he trusts above anyone, though he would phrase it as a knight tolerating a demon.
- Akitaru Obi: His captain, whom Arthur addresses as his king and serves with total, if theatrical, loyalty.
- Maki Oze: A fellow Company 8 fire soldier whose strength Arthur respects, when he remembers to address her as something other than an ogre.
