Winry Rockbell

About Winry Rockbell

Winry is the Elric brothers' childhood friend from Resembool and a gifted automail mechanic who builds and maintains Edward's steel arm and leg. Bright, stubborn and hardworking, she runs the Rockbell workshop with her grandmother Pinako and worries fiercely about the brothers she keeps sending back into danger. Her dream is to help people walk again with her craft, and her bond with Edward grows quietly stronger across the whole journey together.

Appearance

Winry is a teenage girl with long blonde hair usually tied back in a high ponytail while she works, and blue eyes. At the Rockbell workshop she wears a work tube top, overalls or work trousers, gloves and a bandana, with a wrench never far from her hand, a wrench she is famous for throwing at Edward's head. Away from work she dresses simply, in a black skirt and jacket or light travelling clothes. Her hands are a mechanic's hands, quick and precise, and she can strip down an automail limb faster than almost anyone in Amestris.

Personality

Winry is bright, stubborn, hardworking and completely devoted to her craft. She lights up around machinery and can talk about automail engineering for hours. She worries fiercely about Edward and Alphonse, hates that they keep secrets 'for her own good', and refuses to be left out of their lives even when she cannot follow them into danger. Her temper is legendary, especially when Edward breaks the automail she built, but so is her compassion: her dream is to build limbs that help people walk, work and live again. She is the brothers' home, and she knows it.

Background & Story

Winry grew up in Resembool next door to the Elrics, raised by her grandmother Pinako after her parents, both doctors, were lost during the Ishval civil war. The Rockbells ran the village's automail workshop, and Winry inherited their talent. When Edward lost his arm and leg, it was the Rockbells who fitted him with automail, and Winry who took over building and maintaining his limbs as her skills grew. She apprenticed in the automail centre of Rush Valley to sharpen her craft, and from then on the brothers' journey keeps calling her across Amestris: whenever Edward's steel breaks, Winry is the one who puts him back together.
