Scar

Scar

From Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Quick Answer

Scar is an Ishvalan survivor in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, named for the cross-shaped scar on his face, who hunts and kills State Alchemists in revenge for the Ishval civil war. He is voiced by Kenta Miyake in Japanese and J. Michael Tatum in English.

About Scar

Scar is an Ishvalan monk-turned-avenger, named for the cross-shaped scar on his face, who murders State Alchemists in revenge for the Ishval civil war that destroyed his people. His right arm, tattooed with alchemical symbols by his brother, can deconstruct anything it touches. As he crosses paths with the Elrics and May Chang, his hatred slowly collides with harder questions about revenge, faith and what his people actually need to survive.

Appearance

Scar is a tall, heavily built Ishvalan man with the white hair and red eyes of his people, a dark tan, and a brutal X-shaped scar carved across his face. He wears simple, worn travelling clothes, a plain jacket and trousers suited to a fugitive's life, and keeps his right arm covered until he uses it: the arm is covered in dense alchemical tattoos, a design of destruction given to him by his brother. His expression is almost always grim, the face of a man who has replaced his own name with a wound.

Personality

Scar begins as pure, focused vengeance: a monk who has turned his faith into a licence to kill the State Alchemists who burned his homeland. He is intelligent, disciplined and utterly without self-pity. He expects to die on his path and accepts it. What complicates him is that his hatred keeps meeting people it cannot explain: the Elric brothers, who are children; Winry, whose parents saved Ishvalan lives; May Chang, whose kindness he cannot repay with cruelty. Slowly, painfully, the question changes from how to avenge his people to what his people actually need from him.

Background & Story

Scar was an Ishvalan warrior monk in the eastern region of Amestris when the civil war came: the military's extermination campaign, carried out largely by State Alchemists, destroyed his city, his faith community and his family before his eyes. His older brother, an alchemist who had been researching both Amestrian and Xingese arts, gave him his own tattooed right arm as he died, an arm built to deconstruct, the first stage of transmutation, stopping before reconstruction. Scar survived, nameless, and began murdering State Alchemists one by one in the name of his god. That hunt brings him into collision with the Elric brothers early in their journey, and onto a longer road than revenge intended.

Powers & Abilities

  • Destruction Alchemy: Scar's tattooed right arm performs the deconstruction stage of transmutation on anything it grips (shattering stone, steel and flesh alike) stopping before the rebuilding stage.

Key Relationships

  • Edward Elric: A State Alchemist Scar tries to kill more than once, and one of the people who forces him to see his enemies as human beings.
  • May Chang: The little Xing princess who heals him and travels with him; her decency becomes the strongest challenge to his revenge.
  • Winry Rockbell: The daughter of the doctors who treated Ishvalans during the war, meeting her forces Scar to face what his vengeance would make him.

Quick Answers

Why is Scar called Scar?

His real name is never given. 'Scar' comes from the X-shaped scar across his face, received during the destruction of Ishval.

How does Scar's arm work?

His right arm, inherited from his brother, is tattooed with alchemical arrays that perform only the deconstruction stage of transmutation, anything it grasps is torn apart.

Who voices Scar?

Scar is voiced by Kenta Miyake in Japanese and by J. Michael Tatum in the English dub.
