Maes Hughes

About Maes Hughes

Maes Hughes is a military intelligence officer, Mustang's best friend and the most cheerful man in Amestris, famous for ambushing everyone with photographs of his beloved daughter Elicia. Beneath the comedy he is a brilliant investigator who pieces together the Homunculi conspiracy before almost anyone else. His loyalty to his friends and family drives some of the series' most emotional moments, and the people who love him carry his memory into every battle that follows.

Appearance

Hughes is a tall, easy-going officer with short black hair, stubble he never quite shaves, and rectangular glasses over cheerful eyes. He wears the standard blue Amestris uniform, usually a little less formally than regulations prefer, and keeps his two most important items close: his push knives for work, and a photograph of his wife Gracia and daughter Elicia for everything else. His grin is his trademark, the face of a man who can ambush a busy corridor with baby pictures in under three seconds.

Personality

Hughes is the warmest man in the military: funny, generous, endlessly proud of his family and completely shameless about it. Colleagues hide from his photo albums, but everyone trusts him, because the comedy sits on top of one of the sharpest investigative minds in Amestris. He notices patterns others miss, connects records others never compare, and does it all while making tea. His loyalty is total: to Mustang, whose climb he supports from the shadows of the records office, and to the Elric brothers, whom he treats like family from the day they arrive in Central.

Background & Story

Hughes befriended Roy Mustang at the military academy, and the two served through the Ishval civil war, emerging with a shared determination to change the system that ordered it. Married to Gracia and besotted with their young daughter Elicia, Hughes took a post in military investigations and intelligence in Central, a desk job that gives him access to records from every corner of the country. From that desk he quietly feeds Mustang information and shelters the Elric brothers on their visits. It is also from that desk that his sharp eyes begin connecting troop movements, old battle sites and missing files into a pattern almost nobody else has seen.
