Olivier Mira Armstrong
Olivier Mira Armstrong is the major general commanding Fort Briggs in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Alex Louis Armstrong's older sister, feared as the Ice Queen of the north. She is voiced by Yoko Soumi in Japanese and Stephanie Young in English.
About Olivier Mira Armstrong
Olivier Mira Armstrong commands Fort Briggs, Amestris's frozen northern fortress, with an iron will that earns her the name Ice Queen. Alex Louis Armstrong's older sister, she trusts only those who prove themselves and keeps her soldiers alive through the harshest winters and the Drachma threat. When the conspiracy reaches Briggs, her loyalty to her men, over any order from Central, makes her one of the rebellion's strongest pillars.
Appearance
Olivier is a tall, striking woman with long wavy blonde hair, ice-blue eyes, full lips and a stare that has ended arguments at fifty paces. She wears the blue Amestris uniform with a major general's insignia, keeps a sabre at her side and is rarely seen without it. Everything about her is controlled (posture, voice, temper) until the moment she decides it should not be. Next to her brother's sparkling bulk she looks almost slight, and it makes no difference at all: nobody who has met both doubts which Armstrong is more dangerous.
Personality
Olivier trusts nothing she has not tested herself: not orders, not reputations, not family. Her rule at Briggs is survival of the fittest, because the northern winter and the Drachma threat kill the weak without malice or mercy. She is ruthless with incompetence and disloyalty, and absolutely loyal in return to soldiers who earn it, her men would follow her anywhere, and she would spend any of them, including herself, to keep Briggs standing. Sentiment embarrasses her; results do not. When Central's orders begin to smell wrong, her judgement is immediate: her fortress answers to her first.
Background & Story
Olivier Mira Armstrong is the eldest daughter of the Armstrong military family, who took command of Fort Briggs, the mountain fortress guarding Amestris's northern border with Drachma. In the frozen north she built the Briggs way: constant readiness, total self-reliance and loyalty owed to the person beside you, not to distant commanders. When the Elric brothers arrive at Briggs chasing the conspiracy's trail, she interrogates first and believes later, and what she learns convinces her that the rot reaches the top of the military she serves. From that point Briggs, its tanks and its soldiers become one of the strongest pieces on the board against Central.
Powers & Abilities
- Command of Fort Briggs: Olivier commands an elite mountain fortress (its soldiers, tanks and artillery) with a discipline and loyalty that make Briggs effectively her own army.
- Swordsmanship: A master of the sabre, Olivier is fast and lethal in personal combat, more than a match for trained soldiers despite holding no alchemy at all.
Key Relationships
- Alex Louis Armstrong: Her younger brother, whose sentimental style she openly scorns, though she will hear no one else criticise him, and their respect runs deeper than either admits.
- Edward Elric: The young alchemist she interrogates on arrival at Briggs and then backs completely once his information proves true.
- Roy Mustang: A fellow senior officer in the quiet network of soldiers who have stopped trusting Central, Briggs's strength becomes part of Mustang's design when the crisis comes.
