Shinpei Goto is a feared assassin from the island of Tennyo, hired to kill Satoko Kirigaya. Instead, her desperate marriage proposal strikes him like fate itself, and he accepts with terrifying sincerity. Shinpei loves the way he kills: completely, obsessively and without hesitation. His devotion makes him Satoko's most dangerous protector and her most dangerous problem, because a man who takes 'until death do us part' literally will not be reasoned with by anyone.

Shinpei is a lean young man of eighteen with a still, unreadable face. He does not look like a monster, and that is part of what makes him frightening. He moves quietly, watches people the way other men watch weather, and his hands are never far from a blade. When he looks at Satoko, though, something in that flat stare changes, and it is not necessarily reassuring.
Personality
Shinpei loves the way he kills: fully, obsessively, and without a second thought. He has no ordinary sense of proportion. A bargain is a vow, a vow is forever, and 'until death do us part' is, to him, a plain statement of fact. He can be gentle with Satoko in strange, practical ways, and then turn around and terrify everyone in the room. People keep trying to reason with him. It does not work, because in his own mind he is being perfectly reasonable.
Background & Story
Shinpei comes from Tennyo, an island that serves as a pleasure district for the rich and quietly raises people like him: killers for hire. He grew up there and built a name as an assassin people genuinely fear. The job that changed his life sounded routine. Kill the Kirigaya girl, a sickly count's daughter being held by kidnappers. Instead the girl looked at him and proposed marriage, claiming love at first sight. Nobody had ever offered Shinpei anything like it. He accepted on the spot, killed the men who came with the job instead, and walked out of that cell as her self-declared husband.
