Kotaro Ogawa is Satoko's childhood friend, one of the few people who has known her since long before marriage politics and family schemes took over her life. Where Shinpei represents the danger that crashed into Satoko's world, Kotaro represents the decent, ordinary life she was supposed to have. His feelings and his place in her past make him impossible for Shinpei to ignore, and in this story, being noticed by Shinpei is rarely safe.

Kotaro Ogawa grew up alongside Satoko Kirigaya as a childhood friend of the family, one of the few constants in a household where she was treated as a burden. As they grew older, his place in her life became part of the expected script: respectable families, a respectable match, a quiet life. Then Satoko was kidnapped, vanished into the underworld of Tennyo, and came back tied to an assassin. Kotaro is left holding the life she was supposed to live, and Shinpei Goto has noticed him holding it.
