Eishin Nitobe

About Eishin Nitobe

Eishin Nitobe is the son of the superintendent general of the Metropolitan Police Department, a young man from exactly the kind of powerful family the Kirigayas would want Satoko to marry into. Introduced during the anime's run and voiced by Kazuyuki Okitsu, he represents the respectable Meiji establishment, law, rank and proper marriages, standing in sharp contrast to the assassin Satoko has actually chosen, and the underworld closing in around them both.

Appearance

Eishin is a polished young man of the Meiji establishment, the police superintendent general's son, and he looks it: correct dress, correct manners, the confidence of a family that has never once had to ask twice.

Personality

Eishin represents law, rank and proper marriages, everything Satoko's world approves of. Introduced as the anime's story unfolds, he gives that world a face and a suitor's standing. Against Shinpei Goto he is almost a symbol: the future that comes with papers, rank and her father's blessing, arriving in a story where Satoko has already picked the man who came with a knife.

Background & Story

Eishin Nitobe was born into one of the most powerful law-enforcement families in the country, as son of the Metropolitan Police Department's superintendent general. For a house like the Kirigayas, a match with a family like his is the whole game: rank joined to rank, a sickly daughter settled with honour. Eishin enters the story as that respectable option made flesh, while the underworld, and Satoko's chosen assassin, close in around the couple from the other side.

Key Relationships

• Satoko Kirigaya: The Kirigaya daughter his family's standing makes him a natural match for, on paper at least. Satoko's actual choice could not be further from him.
• Jubei Kirigaya: Satoko's father, for whom a Nitobe match would be the respectable outcome he has always wanted.
